Andy Roddick Responds to Andre Agassi's Comments on Alexander Zverev at the Laver Cup
Team Europe Dominates Laver Cup with Zverev Clinching Victory
At the 2026 Laver Cup, Team Europe overwhelmed Team World, finishing with a 13-5 score. Alexander Zverev secured the win for Team Europe by defeating Learner Tien in straight sets.
Andre Agassi’s Remark About Zverev Sparks Reaction
After the match, Team World captain Andre Agassi playfully criticized the world number two. He said, "Congratulations, Sascha, on an incredible year. Watching you win your first Grand Slam was important—not just for you but for me too—because it meant I could finally listen to your press conferences again without hearing complaints about always losing or being the third best." Agassi continued, "Then you win once, and suddenly it’s like, 'I'm only a one-time Slam champion; I have to do it again.'"
Andy Roddick Weighs in on Agassi’s Comments
Former world number one Andy Roddick shared his thoughts on Agassi’s speech during the latest episode of his podcast, Served with Andy Roddick. He noted Agassi's ability to quickly switch between teasing Zverev and delivering a sincere message to his team, which struggled on the final day.
"Andre has an amazing skill to shift gears very fast. He goes from roasting Zverev to heartfelt moments with his team, who clearly love playing for him," Roddick said. "Say what you want about Sascha, but in my experience, he takes criticism well. I've pointed out flaws in his game, and he usually agrees it’s accurate."

Roddick Reflects on Zverev's Response
Roddick believes Agassi knew exactly how to approach his audience. After winning two majors in three months, Zverev seemed to take the jokes in stride. He was even seen laughing along with Team Europe. As Roddick pointed out, it's easier to accept a joke when you're winning regularly.
Zverev's Upcoming Challenge: China Open in Beijing
Following his Laver Cup success, Zverev is set to compete at the China Open starting September 30. Seeded first, he is a strong contender for the title. His projected path includes facing tough opponents:
- 1st Round: Cameron Norrie (Great Britain)
- 2nd Round: Sebastian Baez or Juncheng Shang (home favorite)
- Quarterfinals: [6] Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion returning to form
- Semifinals: Potentially Daniil Medvedev or Jakub Mensik
- Final: Possible matchup against Alex de Minaur or Felix Auger-Aliassime
Zverev has never won the China Open but reached the semi-finals three times (2017, 2019, 2023). Whether he can capture the title this year remains open as he begins his campaign on Centre Court against Norrie.
