World Cup 2026: Updated List of Nations Eliminated from FIFA Tournament
The 2026 World Cup offers more teams a chance to advance than ever before, thanks to the tournament expanding to 48 teams from 32. This expansion adds an extra knockout round, meaning only 16 teams will miss out on progressing beyond the group phase.
Still, some squads face early exits, and disappointment hits hardest for those expected to make deep runs but stumble in the initial stages or knockouts. Below is the current list of teams already eliminated from the tournament.
Confirmed Eliminations as of June 25
Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, and Panama were among the earliest to be knocked out. New tie-breaker rules in group stages played a part; teams tied on points are now ranked based on their head-to-head record first.
For example, Haiti’s 1-0 defeat to Scotland and 3-0 loss to Brazil means they cannot surpass either team in Group C even if they earn points later. If tied with Scotland, Haiti would still finish lower due to losing their direct match.
Understanding Group Stage Tie-Breakers
FIFA outlined the criteria for breaking ties in April. When two or more teams have equal points, rankings are determined by:
- Head-to-head results between tied teams
- Goal difference in those matches
- Goals scored in those matches
If that fails to separate teams, the following apply:
- Overall goal difference in all group games
- Total goals scored in all group games
- Team conduct score based on yellow and red cards
- FIFA ranking position
Advancing Third-Place Teams
The new format allows the eight best third-place teams across groups to advance to the Round of 32. These teams are ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, conduct score, and FIFA ranking.
Expanded Tournament Details
Since 1998, the World Cup featured 32 teams, but 2026 introduces 48 participants. This includes four additional groups and an extra knockout stage, meaning the champion will play eight matches in total.
