St Johnstone Sign Joel Cotterill from Swansea City

St Johnstone have moved to bolster their midfield with the capture of Joel Cotterill from Swansea City on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has signed a contract that runs through to the summer of 2027, a clear sign that the Perth club see him as a long-term piece in their rebuild rather than a short-term gamble.

From Swansea prospect to Perth project

Cotterill arrives with a strong footballing education behind him. A product of Swansea’s youth academy, he broke into the senior set-up in 2022 before being sent out to toughen up in the English lower leagues with loan spells at Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.

His most telling experience, though, came north of the border. The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Dundee, where he featured 11 times in the Premiership and scored once. Those months gave him a first-hand look at the intensity and rhythm of Scottish top-flight football.

That taste has clearly whetted his appetite.

“I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club,” Cotterill told the club’s media team, outlining how quickly the move gathered pace.

He didn’t stop there. Cotterill made a point of watching St Johnstone’s clash with Dundee on Wednesday night, using it as an early study session.

“I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play,” he said.

A midfielder who wants the ball

If St Johnstone are looking to keep the ball more and build through the thirds, Cotterill believes he fits that plan.

“Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen,” he explained. “I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball.”

That blend of composure and aggression in possession is exactly what he hopes will translate into regular Premiership minutes in Perth.

He knows, though, that nothing is handed out at this level.

“I’ve had different challenges out on loan. I think I’ve adapted previously and I’ve already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership,” he said.

“It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I’ll make sure I’m ready for it and up for the challenge.”

Now comes the real test: turning promise and pedigree into consistent influence in a St Johnstone shirt.
