Mike Dean's Controversial Refereeing Games Spark Backlash

Mike Dean has sparked a furious backlash after admitting he used to play “games” with himself while refereeing Premier League matches.

The former top-flight official, who took charge of 553 Premier League fixtures over more than 20 years, lifted the lid on his approach during an appearance on the Jamie Vardy's Having a Party podcast.

Dean’s on‑field “games”

Dean, 58, retired from on-field duties in 2022 before a short spell working as a VAR assistant. Speaking to former England striker Jamie Vardy, he described how he would sometimes try to keep himself amused in the middle of elite fixtures.

“There used to be games that we used to have, as a laugh,” Dean said. “We used to say something like, ‘We’ll kick off now, right? See how long we can go without blowing the whistle.’”

“Done that a few times in the Premier League, before VAR obviously. Went 20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times. Let it go, let it go, let it go.”

He then detailed another personal challenge.

“I used to do another thing in the Premier League. I used to stand in the centre circle and see how long I could stay in the centre circle before I had to leave. That was just me joking about.

“But the lads used to be on the line saying, ‘You can’t’. I said, ‘I’ll try it’. I just used to kind of run around, kind of go, but don’t go out of it. Got about 15 minutes once in one game, without leaving the centre circle.”

Bemusement inside refereeing circles

Those comments have not gone down well within the refereeing community. Figures currently involved in officiating are understood to have reacted with bemusement, with some highlighting what they see as a lack of concrete detail in Dean’s anecdotes.

Refereeing in England is now overseen by the rebranded Pro Ref – formerly Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) – which has been approached for comment on Dean’s claims.

Agbonlahor tears into Dean

Outside the refereeing bubble, the reaction has been far stronger.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, made his anger clear and accused Dean of treating the Premier League like a playground.

“He’s trying to be funny but it’s not funny. You’re not funny, Mike Dean, that sums you up,” Agbonlahor said.

“He’s throwing himself under the bus. This is the Premier League. Are you a child?

“It doesn’t sit right with me at all. I was thinking, ‘Mike Dean managed a lot of games I played in’. One word to describe him, I’d say, is a prat.”

For a league that sells itself on intensity and fine margins, the idea of its most recognisable referee testing how long he could avoid using his whistle or leaving the centre circle lands like a punchline nobody asked for.
