“I think I'll start lessons on Monday. I want to learn Turkish,” he said, outlining a familiar personal rule. “At every club I've played for, I always wanted to be able to talk to the people. Hopefully, I'll be able to speak Turkish in three to four months. It won't be easy, but I will do my best.”

“You know, I've actually been waiting for this for a month,” he admitted. “It's an honour to be here, something I've wanted for a long time.”

His late father played here in the 1990s, leaving a mark that clearly never faded. “He played in Turkey back in 1996. That's why this beautiful country is a second home to me. I still remember those days vividly. That was when I realised I wanted to become a professional footballer.”

This is not a random stop on a long European tour. It feels like a loop closing.

The family threads pull even tighter when he talks about Fenerbahce specifically.

“My brother [Jordan] played here as well. My father's last goal in Turkey was actually against Fener. And the only match I ever played in Turkey before was in this very stadium. Playing for Fenerbahce is something I needed.”

Needed. Not just wanted. That choice of word tells its own story.

For all the sentiment, the reality now is sharp and unforgiving. The season is here, and Lukaku is chasing fitness as hard as any defender will soon be chasing him.

He is still working his way towards peak condition, leaving his involvement in Saturday evening's Super Lig opener away at Genclerbirligi in serious doubt. The clock is ticking, and Fenerbahce cannot wait forever.
