Roma Pursues Mason Greenwood as Marseille Faces €50m Decision

Mason Greenwood’s renaissance season in France has turned into one of Europe’s most intriguing transfer sagas – and Roma are moving aggressively to be at the front of the queue.

After a blistering year with Marseille, the 24-year-old has become one of the hottest attacking properties on the market. Twenty-six goals, 11 assists, 45 games. Those are elite numbers in any league, and in Ligue 1 they have rocketed his value and dragged every major recruitment department back to the video room.

Roma, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, have accelerated talks in recent days. The Italian club have not just registered interest; they are pushing. Greenwood’s father is understood to have opened direct contact with the Giallorossi to explore what a move to the Stadio Olimpico would look like.

Marseille, under financial pressure and under the eye of French football’s watchdog, the DNCG, know exactly what it looks like from their side: a sale, and soon. Failure to qualify for the Champions League has left a sizeable hole in their accounts, and they need to raise funds before the end of the financial year on June 30. Greenwood, on the back of the most productive campaign of his career and a nomination for Ligue 1 Player of the Season, is their most valuable asset.

So Marseille have drawn a line in the sand. The asking price is set at €50m (£42m/$57m). No discounts, no fire sale. That figure is designed to deter opportunistic bids and to reflect a player who has just proved he can carry the attacking load for a major European club.

Roma believe they have cards to play. Champions League football is secured for next season, a powerful lure for a forward determined to test himself at the highest level. Relations between Roma and Marseille are described as strong, and that institutional goodwill could smooth negotiations that, at this price point, are rarely straightforward.

But Roma are not bidding in a vacuum. Juventus have tracked the situation. Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with the England-born forward in recent months, each of them well aware that this kind of output, at 24, rarely comes cheap or stays available for long. Clubs from the Saudi Pro League have joined the chase too, armed with the kind of salaries that can flip a player’s priorities in a heartbeat.

So far, though, Greenwood’s stance is clear: he wants to remain in European football. His words in France have been measured but revealing. Speaking to Foot Mercato about his year at Marseille, he struck a tone of pride and attachment.

"This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months, but individually I think I've had a good season," he said. "There are some incredible players in this team of the year, so it's nice to receive this trophy. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. We play incredible matches, and for me, it's one of the best leagues I've played in. I hope I can stay."

Those final six words – “I hope I can stay” – hang over everything. They capture the tension at the heart of Marseille’s summer. The player, happy, productive, and adored, would gladly extend the story. The club, squeezed by the numbers and a looming June 30 deadline, may not have that luxury.

That is why Greenwood’s future is set to dominate Marseille’s off-season. Every negotiation, every budget line, every incoming move will be shaped by whether someone meets that €50m valuation. Roma’s Champions League platform and their proactive approach give them an early edge, but interest from Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Dortmund and Saudi Arabia ensures this is no formality.

For now, Marseille hold the asset, Roma hold the momentum, and Europe’s elite watch the clock. The next bid will say a lot about how high Greenwood’s ceiling is judged to be – and where the most prolific season of his career takes him next.
