Rodri Joins Barcelona Training with Tailored Plan as Cancelo Integrates

Rodri has officially hit the training pitch as a Barcelona player – but not quite at full throttle yet.

The summer headline signing completed his first proper session at the club’s facilities on Friday, working away from the main group under an individual programme designed to sharpen his fitness after the holidays. He had already taken part in the pre-match activation before the Joan Gamper Trophy, but this was his first real taste of day-to-day work in blaugrana.

The World Cup winner arrives in excellent shape, something he stressed at his presentation. Even so, the coaching staff have drawn up a specific plan to bring him up to speed at the rhythm they want, not the one the calendar demands.

“I’m ready to play already,” Rodri said when he was unveiled. “The back operation that was talked about was nothing, it was an outpatient procedure. I’m ready to train with the team and, when the coach decides, once I’ve got some rhythm, I’ll be ready to play. I hope it will be as soon as possible.”

For now, that rhythm is being built step by step.

Flick refuses to rush Rodri

After a rest day on Thursday, Barça were back at work to prepare for Sunday’s La Liga opener away to Elche at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero. The whole week has been geared towards that first official test of the season.

Rodri, though, did not yet match the intensity of his new teammates. The 30-year-old Madrid-born midfielder stayed on his individual schedule, a clear sign that the club are determined to manage his integration carefully.

Even so, it is too early to cross his name off the list for Elche. Saturday’s final training session and Hansi Flick’s press conference will be decisive in gauging whether the midfielder can make his competitive debut in Barça colours this weekend.

Flick has already drawn a line in recent weeks: he will not gamble with any player’s physical condition. The message from the German and his staff is blunt – full fitness comes before short-term urgency, no matter how big the name or how tempting the occasion.

Cancelo back with the group – but still waiting

On the opposite flank of Barça’s summer business, Joao Cancelo is finally back where he wanted to be: on the grass at Spotify Camp Nou, training with the group.

After several tense weeks waiting for his return to be formally completed, the Portuguese full-back joined the rest of the squad in Friday’s session and trained normally. The long wait, the uncertainty, the paperwork – all of it gave way to what he does best: working with the ball at his feet.

Whether Flick can actually use him against Elche is another matter. Cancelo still has to be registered before he can feature, and at this point none of the new signings have been registered with the league. Even Andreas Christensen, who renewed his contract this summer, is still pending inscription.

For now, Cancelo is doing everything within his control. He trained alongside all available first-team players and a sizeable group of youngsters: Eder Aller, Xavi Espart, Jordi Pesquer, Ebrima Tunkara, Orian Goren, Hamza Abdelkarim, Brian Farinas and Alvaro Cortes all joined in, a reminder of the club’s reliance on academy depth as the administrative pieces fall into place.

Rodri building up alone, Cancelo already at full tilt with the group, key contracts still unregistered – Barcelona step into their first official match of the season with quality on the pitch, but questions still hanging over who Flick will actually be allowed to use.
