Rodri's Future: Barcelona Push for Manchester City Star

Manchester City have knocked back a £38.5m (€45m) bid from Barcelona for Rodri and made it clear they will not even open the door unless the offer climbs towards £60m.

For the first time since he walked into the Etihad in 2019, the possibility of Rodri leaving feels real. The Spain captain is in the final year of his contract, has rejected a lucrative extension and, crucially, has chosen his next destination. After talks with Real Madrid collapsed this week, Barcelona have emerged as his preferred move.

Rodri wants Barça – but City dig in

Rodri, fresh from winning the World Cup Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding player last month, has already agreed personal terms with the Spanish champions. He has told City he wants to return home in the wake of Pep Guardiola’s departure, and Barcelona have wasted no time trying to seize the moment.

The Catalan club’s first offer fell well short of City’s valuation. The Premier League champions are adamant: their midfield metronome will not leave on the cheap. Negotiations continue, with Barça pushing for a compromise and City holding their line.

The pursuit stepped up on Wednesday, when Rodri spoke directly with Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco about the move. Barcelona’s need is obvious. Frenkie de Jong faces several months out after a knee injury, ripping a hole in the heart of Flick’s midfield before the season has even started. Rodri is their chosen answer.

He is not in perfect condition himself. The 30-year-old has undergone minor back surgery and will miss most of City’s pre-season. That has not cooled Barcelona’s interest, nor City’s valuation.

City plan for life after their anchor

Behind the scenes, City have already started reshaping their midfield options. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest in a £116m deal, a bold fee for a player still establishing himself at the elite level. Talks are ongoing with Lille over Ayyoub Bouaddi, the highly rated Morocco midfielder who could cost up to £80m.

If Rodri goes, though, City know they may need more than potential. A ready-made leader in the middle of the pitch is on the agenda, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández among the names under serious consideration. The World Cup winner would not come cheap and is hardly short of suitors.

Madrid stung, Barcelona push, market waits

Real’s manager, José Mourinho, has already felt the sting of losing out on Rodri to their great rivals. Central midfield was a priority position for him on his return to the Santiago Bernabéu, and reports in Spain suggest the 63-year-old is far from pleased at seeing Barcelona move to the front of the queue.

Madrid have not exactly been quiet in this window. Yan Diomande has arrived for £115m, while Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espí have all been added to a squad that suddenly looks bloated and expensive. To go after Fernández as well, the European champions may have to sacrifice one of Aurélien Tchouaméni or Eduardo Camavinga.

So the picture is clear. Barcelona are pressing hard for Rodri, the player wants the move, Real Madrid lurk over Fernández, and Manchester City sit in the middle of the storm, counting the numbers and weighing up the risk of losing the man who has been their on‑pitch compass for half a decade.

The fee will decide how bold they dare to be.
