Real Madrid Considers Aurelien Tchouameni Sale to Manchester United

Manchester United have moved for Aurelien Tchouameni – and, crucially, Real Madrid are ready to listen.

United have made a firm enquiry for the France international as they hunt a specialist defensive midfielder, and senior figures at the Bernabeu are now understood to be willing to cash in if a suitable offer lands on the table.

The timing is no accident. Tchouameni’s World Cup campaign with France is over, United’s need for a true No6 remains unsolved, and Madrid’s midfield is evolving fast.

Contract noise, transfer reality

Reports in Spain recently suggested Tchouameni, 26, had agreed a contract extension with Madrid. No announcement has followed. Officially, he remains tied to the club until 2028, a long-term deal that gives the 15-time European champions leverage in any negotiation.

It has not stopped movement behind the scenes.

Sources in Madrid describe United’s interest as “strong”. Tchouameni has been on their shortlist since earlier this year, a profile match as much as a footballing one: a Champions League winner, a World Cup finalist, and firmly within United’s preferred 22–26 age bracket for major signings.

He joined Madrid from Monaco four years ago for an initial €80m, a fee that could rise to €100m. Any sale now would be judged against that outlay and his status as one of Europe’s leading holding midfielders.

Madrid’s midfield reshaped

The landscape around him has shifted. Madrid have already added Bernardo Silva, who operated in a deeper role for Manchester City last season, and still boast Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde as central pillars of their midfield.

Camavinga and Valverde are both under contract a year longer than Tchouameni, a detail that underlines Madrid’s long-term planning. With that core in place and other priorities emerging, the club’s stance on Tchouameni has softened from “untouchable” to “available for the right fee”.

There is another strand to this. Madrid have been linked with a move for Spain’s World Cup star Rodri, named the tournament’s best player. The 30-year-old is out of contract at Manchester City next year and a transfer this summer has been widely touted. Should Madrid push ahead for him, a high-value sale in midfield would help clear both space and budget.

New coach Jose Mourinho had initially planned to keep Tchouameni at the heart of his side. The market, and Madrid’s options, may yet force a rethink.

United’s search for a true No6

At Old Trafford, the need is clear. United have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to deepen their midfield options, but neither is a pure holding midfielder in the mould the club have been craving.

Tchouameni fits that brief. He screens, he breaks up play, he dictates tempo from deep. His age, availability and pedigree tick every box for a recruitment department that has spent the last few years trying to correct a series of short-term fixes in the middle of the pitch.

This is not the first time United have had the chance to sign him. In 2021, when he was still at Monaco, Tchouameni was offered to the club. The response then was that there was no budget for a midfield arrival. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the manager at the time, wanted a midfielder and was particularly keen on Declan Rice. United hesitated. Madrid did not.

A familiar transfer loop

There is a symmetry to what is happening now. Madrid originally bought Tchouameni to replace Casemiro, who left for United in a £70m deal in 2022. Casemiro arrived at 30, in the middle of another midfield crisis, days after United had been humiliated 4-0 at Brentford.

His Old Trafford spell summed up the club’s recent transfer story. Casemiro shone in his first and last seasons but was also part of two of the worst United sides in 34 and 51 years. The club released him last month.

He is not alone on that list. Raphael Varane, another marquee arrival from Madrid in 2021 at the age of 28, brought pedigree and big-game experience, starting in League Cup and FA Cup final wins, but injuries repeatedly disrupted his rhythm. He too has now gone.

Angel Di Maria’s move in 2014 set a British transfer record at £59.7m. It unravelled within a year. His unhappy stint ended with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and a hostile reception on his return to Old Trafford in 2019.

United know the risks of shopping at the Bernabeu. They also know the rewards when it works.

A different kind of gamble?

This time, the profile is different. Tchouameni is not an ageing star looking for one last contract. He is in his prime, established at the highest level, and plays in a position United have failed to lock down for more than a decade.

Madrid, armed with alternatives and eyeing Rodri, are open to a deal. United, armed with intent and a clear gap in their squad, are pushing.

Whether they break the cycle of short-term fixes and mixed returns may depend on how far they are willing to go for a player they passed on once before.
