Chelsea's Pursuit of Manu Koné Amid Enzo Fernandez Transfer

Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is accelerating, and it could unlock one of the biggest transfers of the summer.

With Enzo Fernandez pushing to join Manchester City in a £120m deal that would make him the most expensive midfielder in history, Chelsea have moved decisively for his potential successor: Manu Koné of Roma.

Chelsea strike personal terms with Koné

Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with Koné, according to FootballTransfers, and are now working to close a deal with Roma before the window shuts.

The report claims the London club are “pushing to sign” the 25-year-old, who has quickly risen to the top of their shortlist as they prepare for life after Enzo. Lamine Camara of Monaco had also been under serious consideration, but Koné has become the primary target.

French journalist Santi Aouna backed up the developments, revealing that Chelsea have made direct contact with Roma to discuss a transfer. He reported that talks between the clubs are ongoing, underlining how quickly this move has gathered pace.

Roma resist as Chelsea raise the stakes

Roma, though, are not rolling over.

Nico Schira reported that Chelsea have tabled an offer worth €65m (around £56m) for Koné. The midfielder is described as “non-transferable” by coach Gian Piero Gasperini, highlighting just how central he is to Roma’s plans. Schira added that the decision now rests with the player and Roma owner Dan Friedkin.

The stance is clear: Roma do not want to sell. But every player has a price, and Chelsea are testing exactly where that line sits.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has since painted a slightly different financial picture. He described the deal as “advanced” between Chelsea and Roma, but at a lower figure than Schira’s estimate, stating that the agreement being worked on is for around £52m.

The message, though, is the same. Chelsea are deep in negotiations and believe Koné can be prised away.

Enzo’s exit edging closer

All of this feeds directly into the Enzo Fernandez saga.

Manchester City are ready to make him their record signing at £120m, a fee that would also set a new benchmark for a midfielder. Fernandez wants the move. Chelsea are willing to sanction it, but only if two conditions are met: City must pay the full price, and a suitable replacement must be secured first.

Koné is that replacement.

If Roma finally crack and accept Chelsea’s offer, the dominoes will fall quickly. Koné to Stamford Bridge would move Enzo a significant step closer to the Etihad, and reshape two midfields at the very top of European football.

Roma are holding firm for now. Chelsea are pushing harder with every day that passes.

Something will have to give.
