Leeds United Sign Defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach

Leeds United have landed experienced Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m, handing Daniel Farke a leader for the heart of his back line.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Elland Road and, just as importantly, reunites with a coach he already trusts.

“He is also a big point for this change,” Elvedi said of Farke. “It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now.”

For Leeds, that relationship matters. For Elvedi, it clearly tipped the balance.

A decade in Germany, a new challenge in England

Borussia Monchengladbach accepted an offer worth an initial £6.8m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons, drawing a line under Elvedi’s 11-year stay at the club.

He leaves behind 364 appearances in the Bundesliga and cup competitions, a body of work that marks him out as one of the most seasoned defenders to arrive at Elland Road in recent years.

On the international stage, his record is just as strong. Elvedi has earned 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their recent run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, underlining his durability and reliability on the biggest stage.

Farke’s rebuild takes shape

Elvedi becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer window, joining James Trafford, Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic in a squad that is being steadily reshaped.

The Swiss centre-back is expected to anchor a defence that has already undergone change, and his arrival has had an immediate knock-on effect. Sebastiaan Bornauw has left Elland Road to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a move made possible by Leeds securing Elvedi’s signature.

There was more movement up the pitch too. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe completed a season-long loan switch to West Ham, trimming Leeds’ attacking options while the club doubles down on reinforcing its spine.

Farke now has a defender he knows, trusts and has already improved once. Leeds have a player hardened by the Bundesliga and international football. The question is simple: how quickly can that experience turn into control at Elland Road?
