Radek Vitek Leaves Manchester United for Middlesbrough

Radek Vitek’s Manchester United chapter is over. The next one starts on Teesside.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper has completed a permanent move to Middlesbrough, with the deal structured to be worth up to £14 million – a figure that would set a new record fee for a Championship goalkeeper if all add-ons are triggered. For a player who has yet to play a senior competitive game for United, it is a striking number, and a clear statement from Boro about where they believe he is heading.

United’s reshaped goalkeeping hierarchy

This transfer has been on the cards since United moved early in the window to bring in Karl Darlow on a free. With Senne Lammens already earmarked as first choice heading into the new season, Vitek suddenly found himself pushed down to third in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

He had no intention of staying there.

From the start of the summer, Vitek made it plain: he wanted regular first-team football, not a back-up role. After United’s opening pre-season fixture against Wrexham, he stopped for reporters and left no room for doubt.

"I feel great and ready to go again somewhere to be, hopefully, number one, so we will see, we will see what is going to happen," he said.

The answer, as it turns out, is the Riverside.

INEOS play the long game

United, according to the Manchester Evening News, were prepared not to stand in his way. The club recognised both his ambition and the logjam in front of him. But the new INEOS regime was never going to let a highly rated young goalkeeper walk out the door without a safety net.

The deal with Middlesbrough is laced with protection for United. There is a buy-back clause. There are matching rights. There is also a 35 per cent sell-on clause, ensuring they profit handsomely if Boro’s gamble pays off and a bigger fish comes calling.

For United, it is a compromise: immediate funds, a cleaner squad structure, and the option to bring Vitek back if he blossoms into the goalkeeper many inside the club believe he can become.

From FA Youth Cup to the Championship grind

Vitek’s journey to this point has been steady rather than spectacular, but always upward.

He arrived at United’s academy in 2020 from Sigma Olomouc in the Czech Republic, a teenager with size, presence and a reputation as one of the most promising goalkeepers of his age group back home. He quickly made his mark in England.

In 2021/22, he played every match in United’s triumphant FA Youth Cup run, a competition that has long been a barometer for the club’s next generation. From there he stepped up to the Under-21s, and the loan carousel began.

Each move nudged him closer to the level he now joins.

He spent six months at Accrington Stanley from January 2024, learning the realities of senior football in the lower leagues. A season-long spell with Austrian side Blau-Weiss Linz in 2024/25 followed, another productive stint that hardened his game and his mentality away from the Old Trafford spotlight.

The real breakthrough, though, came last term at Bristol City. There, Vitek finally tasted Championship football, gathering the kind of experience that turns promise into a credible track record. His performances drew attention from around the division and made this summer’s permanent move inevitable.

Middlesbrough’s promotion intent

Middlesbrough have not signed a project for tomorrow. They have signed a goalkeeper they believe can help them out of the Championship now.

Still raw, still developing, yes. But Boro are not shopping in United’s academy for sentiment. They are trying to avenge last season’s play-off final defeat to Hull City and go one better. Committing up to £14 million on a goalkeeper sends a clear message about their intent and about the responsibility Vitek will be expected to shoulder.

For Vitek, this is the platform he has been pushing for: a permanent home, a club with promotion ambitions, and a realistic chance to establish himself as a No 1 at a high level. For United, it is a calculated risk wrapped in clauses and percentages.

If he thrives on Teesside and drags Middlesbrough towards the Premier League, both clubs will feel they made the right call. The next save he makes will not just shape Boro’s season – it might also decide how loudly United come knocking in a few years’ time.
