Tottenham Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Premier League Opener
Tottenham will kick off their Premier League season without both their captain and vice-captain, after Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro were ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Brentford.
The defensive pair are joined on the sidelines by Pape Matar Sarr, who suffered a hamstring problem in the final days of preparation for the opener.
Manager's Update
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi confirmed the triple blow on Friday. “Micky is not on the list for tomorrow, like Pedro Porro,” he said. “Pape Matar Sarr no, because he felt some pain in his hamstring today. Nothing serious, but we don’t take risks.”
Van de Ven’s situation at least carries some encouragement. De Zerbi revealed the centre-back has rejoined full training after an issue picked up on the club’s pre-season tour.
“Today, he worked with the group, and he is going very well,” De Zerbi explained. “He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don’t know if it was the flight, but not a big problem.”
Depth in Defence
Even so, the manager will turn to his depth for the opening weekend. “We have [Marcos] Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow,” he said.
The injuries leave Tottenham light not just in defence but in leadership. With Van de Ven and Porro both out, Spurs are deprived of their new captain and first vice-skipper for the curtain-raiser in west London.
Ben Davies, third in the leadership hierarchy, is available but not expected to start. James Maddison, fourth on the list, is short of match fitness and unlikely to shoulder a full 90 minutes.
That opens the door for Archie Gray. Fifth in line in the leadership group and set to deputise at right-back for Porro, the teenager could find himself wearing the armband on the opening day of the season — a stark early test of both Tottenham’s depth and their new era of dressing-room authority.
