PSG Dominates Slovan Bratislava as Liverpool Overcomes Atletico Madrid in Champions League Openers
PSG Cruises Past Slovan Bratislava with Ferran Torres Hat-Trick
Paris Saint-Germain, the defending champions, launched their quest for a third straight Champions League title by overpowering Slovan Bratislava 6-1. Ferran Torres was the star, netting a hat-trick in a commanding display on Wednesday.
The French giants wasted no time dismantling Slovan's defense at the Parc des Princes. Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring with a rebound before heading in a deflected cross, putting Luis Enrique's squad two goals ahead within 22 minutes.
Torres scored his first by tapping in a cross from Dembele just after the 30-minute mark, then added a second less than two minutes into the second half. His third came in the 57th minute, an unusual knee shot that spun into the bottom corner, sealing the rout.
Suleiman Camara managed a consolation goal for Slovan, but Fabian Ruiz sealed the final scoreline by capitalizing on a mishit clearance.
Torres acknowledged the challenge ahead: "It is the Champions League; we always face tough opponents. But our focus has to remain on Ligue 1 because we haven’t started well domestically this season." PSG will next face Manchester City away and host Barcelona in their following European matches.
Liverpool Rally to Defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1
Following their Premier League win at Ipswich, Liverpool secured back-to-back victories by coming from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield.
Atletico took the lead in the 17th minute when Julian Alvarez, starting his first game of the season, set up Marcos Llorente. Llorente lifted the ball over goalkeeper Alisson, marking his fifth goal in three visits to Anfield.
Liverpool responded just before halftime through Dominik Szoboszlai, who finished after a clever backheel assist from Ronald Araujo. Then, five minutes into the second half, Alexis Mac Allister put Liverpool ahead with a powerful left-footed shot from outside the box. Atletico struggled to respond thereafter.
"I’ve loved it. The atmosphere has been incredible and I feel lucky, lucky to experience it," said Liverpool’s new manager Andoni Iraola after his Champions League coaching debut.
