Nico Gonzalez Available for Transfer as Newcastle Pursues Deal
Manchester City have told Nico Gonzalez he can leave before the transfer window closes, opening the door for Newcastle United to move for the midfielder as they scramble to rebuild their engine room.
Inside the City dressing room, not everyone agrees.
Several of Gonzalez’s teammates have tried to convince the Spaniard to stay, according to reports, but the club’s stance is clear: with competition intensifying in midfield, he is available.
Newcastle circle after Tonali and Guimaraes exits
Newcastle have already opened talks over a deal for the 24-year-old as they hunt for reinforcements following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
The Athletic report that the Magpies have held “exploratory conversations” over Gonzalez, who has quickly emerged as one of their priority options. He is understood to be one of three midfielders on their shortlist, but the City man is currently viewed as the leading target.
Journalist Craig Hope of the Daily Mail claims Gonzalez is “open” to joining Newcastle, even as some figures at City urge him to think twice.
From £52m signing to the fringes
Gonzalez arrived at the Etihad from FC Porto in January last year for £52 million, a statement signing for a side already stacked with quality in central areas.
He never truly forced his way into Pep Guardiola’s strongest XI. With Rodri untouchable at the base of midfield and Mateo Kovacic preferred in rotation, Gonzalez’s minutes were limited last season and his situation has not improved.
The arrival of Elliot Anderson has pushed him further down the order, and City are also in advanced talks with Lille over Ayyoub Bouaddi, another sign of where Gonzalez now sits in the pecking order.
Maresca’s arrival hasn’t changed the picture
Some around the club believed Enzo Maresca’s appointment might offer Gonzalez a fresh start. A new manager, a new system, a new chance.
The early evidence says otherwise. After last weekend’s Community Shield, it is clear he remains behind Kovacic in Maresca’s thinking, leaving his path to regular football blocked once again.
Just a few weeks ago, Gonzalez sounded determined to fight.
Speaking after a friendly win over K-League All Stars in South Korea at the start of the month, he insisted he was content with his role.
“I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here,” he said.
“I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position.
“That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”
Since then, the market has shifted. So has City’s midfield.
Now the decision lies with Gonzalez: stay and fight for scraps at a club stacked with options, or step into a central role at Newcastle, where a rebuilt midfield needs a new leader.
