Napoli Sign Benoit Badiashile on Loan from Chelsea
Napoli have moved decisively to reinforce their defence, sealing a deal for Chelsea centre-back Benoit Badiashile on the eve of their Serie A kick-off.
The Italian club confirmed on Saturday that the 25-year-old Frenchman has joined on an initial loan with an option to buy, a structure designed to ease him into life in Naples while keeping a permanent stay firmly on the table.
“Napoli announced that it has acquired the sporting rights to the player Benoit Badiashile from Chelsea on a temporary basis with a permanent option,” read the statement on the club’s website, drawing a clear line under his short and stuttering spell in London.
Badiashile struggled to nail down a regular place at Stamford Bridge last season, making 16 appearances across all competitions in a campaign dominated by managerial upheaval and tactical reshuffles. Now he gets a reset in Serie A, where expectations will be high from day one.
The numbers behind the move underline its significance for both clubs. According to Sky Sport transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli will pay a €3 million loan fee for the season, with an option to make the transfer permanent for a further €20m next summer. That gives Chelsea a realistic path to recouping a solid chunk of the €37m they paid Monaco in January 2023.
Not everyone in Italy agrees on the final figures. Some outlets have reported that the option could climb as high as €27m once add-ons and bonuses are included, hinting at performance-related clauses that could kick in if Badiashile becomes a cornerstone of Napoli’s back line.
What is not in dispute is the direction of travel at Stamford Bridge. Badiashile is the latest notable exit in a busy window, following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid, Andrey Santos’ switch to Manchester United, and Trevoh Chalobah’s departure to Como. Chelsea’s defensive unit, once swollen with options, is being trimmed and reshaped at pace.
For Napoli, this is another clear statement that they intend to refresh rather than rebuild. Badiashile arrives as their second major first-team signing of the summer after the capture of Costantino Favasuli from US Catanzaro earlier in the week, adding height, athleticism and top-level experience to the squad.
The French international arrives in Italy with a substantial body of work behind him. Before Chelsea, he amassed 135 competitive appearances for Monaco, growing into one of Ligue 1’s most coveted young defenders. His time in England has been more uneven, but he still clocked up 42 Premier League appearances and showed flashes of the composure and range of passing that first attracted elite scouts.
True to tradition, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis did not wait for the formalities to be completed before going public. He broke the news on social media with a simple “Benvenuto Benoit” on X, a typically direct welcome from a president who likes to set the tone himself.
The timing is no coincidence. Napoli open their new Serie A campaign later today away to Genoa, and while Badiashile’s immediate involvement will depend on fitness and paperwork, his arrival sends a clear message. As the season starts, Napoli are not just defending their status. They are arming themselves to push harder.
