Michael Kayode Shines as Brentford Defeats Tottenham Hotspur
Michael Kayode crashed home Brentford’s third to deepen Tottenham Hotspur’s opening-day misery and underline his own rapid rise in the Premier League.
The Italy U21 defender reacted quickest to a loose ball from the second phase of a corner, stretching out a leg to turn it in just three minutes into the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium. Tottenham had barely reset after the interval; suddenly they were 3-0 down and staring at Roberto De Zerbi on the touchline for answers.
The damage had started early. Keane Lewis-Potter struck in the first half, Vitaly Janelt added a second, and Brentford went in at the break with a grip on the game that felt firm but not yet decisive. Kayode changed that. His instinctive finish turned a commanding lead into a rout in waiting.
For the 22-year-old, it was only his second goal in the English top flight, following his strike in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers back in March. The timing could hardly be better. Earlier in the summer, he signed a long-term contract extension, tying himself to Brentford until 2032 and signalling the club’s belief that he is a cornerstone of their future rather than a fleeting prospect.
There was an Italian subplot to the afternoon as well. Kayode’s goal came against compatriot head coach Roberto De Zerbi, with Italy international Sandro Tonali named in the Spurs starting XI. One young Italian full-back, still capped only at U21 level, left the pitch with his stock rising; the more established names in navy blue trudged off with questions hanging over them.
Kayode has already made 10 appearances for Italy’s U21 side, a regular presence in a squad pushing through the next generation of Azzurri talent. He is still waiting for that first senior call-up, still on the outside of Luciano Spalletti’s plans looking in.
Performances and moments like this, on the Premier League’s opening weekend and under the glare of a high-profile opponent, tend to accelerate those conversations. How long can the national team ignore a defender who delivers on nights like these?
