Myles Lewis-Skelly: Arsenal's Rising Star and Transfer Rumors

Jamie Carragher has been left stunned by the idea that Arsenal would even entertain selling Myles Lewis-Skelly, describing the young midfielder as a “pretty special” talent and questioning how such a scenario ever gathered pace.

Arsenal, fresh from their Premier League title triumph, have spent the summer flexing their muscle. Christos Tzolis has arrived, Bruno Guimaraes has been landed, and Piero Hincapie’s stay has been made permanent. Big moves, big statements.

Amid all that, a very different kind of story cut through the transfer noise: suggestions that Lewis-Skelly, who impressed in midfield towards the end of last season, had been offered to Chelsea and Manchester United as part of Arsenal’s reshaping.

Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, could not get his head around it.

“That’s the thing that was a little bit strange about it,” he said. “It felt almost like Arsenal offered Manchester United Myles Lewis-Skelly.

“It wasn’t Myles Lewis-Skelly saying, I want to leave, or his people putting something out. That’s where the shock came from, not so much the players’ side of it.”

The former Liverpool defender then pointed straight to the evidence on the pitch. Not hype. Not potential. Performances.

“I still can’t believe it,” Carragher continued. “Obviously, last season wasn’t great for him for the whole season, but when a young player has already put in performances like I’ve seen him put in at the Bernabeu – maybe over a year or 18 months ago, at left-back, he was running the game at the Bernabeu – and then his performance in the final in central midfield against Paris Saint-Germain.

“You can’t play at that level unless you’re pretty special at that age. All young players have ups and downs. Last season he didn’t play as much as he probably would have liked.

“But his ceiling is so high for the performances he’s already put in as a 20-year-old kid. I couldn’t believe that Arsenal would even think about letting him go. It does feel like a strange one.”

The reaction summed up what many Arsenal supporters were thinking. Why would a club that has finally built a title-winning core even flirt with the idea of losing one of its brightest academy products, especially one who has already shown he can handle the biggest stages?

Rumours, though, have started to unravel under scrutiny.

Reports that Lewis-Skelly had been “offered” to Chelsea and Manchester United have been firmly knocked back. Caught Offside, The Athletic and the Daily Mail all stated that Arsenal had made no such approach and that the club are not looking to cash in on the teenager.

Mark Brus, writing for Caught Offside, went as far as to spell out the situation after checking with his contacts.

“I’ve double and triple checked this with my sources today, and, as I suspect has already been reported elsewhere, there is no desire for Arsenal to sell Lewis-Skelly, nor does the player himself wish to leave,” he wrote.

“It’s been suggested that Chelsea and Man Utd have ‘rejected’ the 19-year-old, but that’s not accurate – you can’t reject a player who isn’t for sale and who isn’t looking for a move.”

So the picture looks very different to the one painted by the initial whispers. No push from the player. No shop window from the club. No rejection from supposed suitors.

What remains is the core truth that had Carragher so animated: Arsenal have a gifted young midfielder with Champions League-level performances already on his CV, and a ceiling that still feels a long way off. The real question now is not who might buy him, but how central a role he will be handed in the next phase of Arsenal’s title defence.
