Jose Mourinho Targets Marc Cucurella for Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has not taken charge of a single Real Madrid training session yet, but the squad list is already under his scalpel.

One name sits high on it: Marc Cucurella.

Mourinho’s first incision: the left flank

According to journalist Ruben Canizares, Mourinho has zeroed in on the Chelsea full-back as he maps out his first major adjustments at the Bernabeu. The Portuguese coach, famed for reshaping teams from the back, is unconvinced by his current left-back options and sees room – and need – for an upgrade.

Cucurella, meanwhile, is edging towards the exit at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard’s future in London grows murkier by the week, and those around him believe the time is right for a new challenge. His camp consider a transfer fee in the region of €45-50 million as realistic. Anything substantially higher, they regard as a non-starter.

That price bracket puts him squarely in the conversation for Europe’s elite.

Barcelona lurking in the background

Cucurella’s name has resurfaced on the shortlists of several major clubs, and not just in Madrid.

Barcelona are also tracking the situation, a familiar story in recent windows. Their interest is real, but as ever, their room to manoeuvre depends on outgoings and the fragile balance of their finances. Until they clear space on the wage bill and in the squad, they remain more onlookers than aggressors.

Real Madrid, by contrast, are already monitoring developments with intent. No formal move has been made, no bid lodged, but the interest is active. Mourinho wants more experience and reliability on that flank, and Cucurella’s profile fits the brief: battle-tested in the Premier League, tactically flexible, and aggressive in both phases.

Carreras under scrutiny, competition on the way

On paper, Madrid are not short of left-backs. They have three options in-house, including Alvaro Carreras, who arrived last summer amid high expectations.

On the pitch, that depth has not fully convinced Mourinho.

Carreras remains part of the squad picture, but the incoming coach does not see the position as settled. He wants sharper competition, a player who can step straight into high-stakes fixtures without a long bedding-in period. That line of thinking inevitably drags Cucurella to the forefront of the discussion.

The Spaniard is ready to leave Chelsea. Madrid are weighing whether he is the one to reshape their left side.

The numbers game at the Bernabeu

There is, however, a hard reality to confront.

For Madrid to bring in another left-back, someone will almost certainly have to go. Carrying four players for one position is a luxury, even for a club of their resources, and Mourinho’s rebuild has other priorities as well. Central defence, midfield depth, attacking reinforcements – all of it competes for the same budget.

Cucurella’s entourage may be confident that a deal should land in the €45-50 million range, but the question inside the Bernabeu is sharper: does reinforcing the left flank justify that level of investment right now?

Mourinho has made his stance clear. He wants Cucurella. The club must now decide whether this is the first big cheque of a new era, or a temptation they park while other fires burn hotter.
