Mourinho Defends Vinicius Junior After Chaotic Champions League Win

Jose Mourinho stepped into the line of fire for Vinicius Junior on Tuesday night, defending the Real Madrid forward after sections of the Santiago Bernabeu jeered him during a chaotic Champions League win over Inter Milan.

Madrid edged a wild contest 2-1, with Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde on target before Carlos Augusto dragged Inter back into the game. The result pleased the home fans. The performance did not.

A Win Mourinho Wanted – But Not Like This

Before kick-off, Mourinho had been blunt: he would gladly take an ugly win over a glorious defeat. He got his wish on the scoreboard, even if the 90 minutes veered far from the controlled display he might have imagined.

Speaking to Movistar, he summed it up in one word: chaos.

"I prefer to say it was a crazy match," he said. "We are often criticised when the match is boring, and today it was crazy, and it could have ended 7-6 without any problem."

The game swung from end to end. Inter carved Madrid open repeatedly. Madrid, in turn, wasted a string of counter-attacks that could have buried the tie long before the final whistle.

Mourinho did not sugarcoat where his team had suffered most.

"Our midfield was weak, they made changes very early, and I did not have many options in midfield," he admitted.

That vulnerability gave Inter a route back into the match and left Madrid hanging on at times inside their own stadium.

Courtois Saves, Pressing Pays

Thibaut Courtois stood tall again. The Belgian made several important stops as Inter poured forward, but Mourinho refused to turn the story into a one-man rescue act.

"Courtois made many saves, but how many goals did we waste on the counter-attacks? It was a wonderful match," he said, pointing to Madrid’s missed chances as much as their goalkeeper’s heroics.

He also moved quickly to highlight the collective work that led to Valverde’s goal, stressing that Madrid’s pressing game had forced the mistakes that opened the door.

For Mourinho, the grind without the ball mattered as much as the moments of brilliance with it.

Mourinho Draws a Line Around Vinicius

The sharpest part of his post-match message, though, was aimed not at his players, but at the stands.

Vinicius, still short of his explosive best after his latest setback, was jeered by some supporters. Mourinho was having none of it.

He accepted the Brazilian is not yet the unstoppable winger Madrid fans have come to expect. He refused to accept the reaction.

"He has not yet reached his full readiness, and he is not yet the Vinicius we know, but he works a lot, and whoever works and gives everything he has deserves respect," Mourinho said.

It was a clear call for patience, and for recognition of effort as much as end product.

Vinicius now has his answer to give, not in front of the microphones but on the pitch, as Real Madrid switch their focus back to LaLiga and a meeting with Rayo Vallecano that will test just how quickly this team – and its most scrutinised forward – can settle into their true rhythm.
