Milan’s summer is starting to feel like a balancing act on a tightrope. At one end, the hunt for a new No.10. At the other, the looming possibility of losing the man who has come to define their attack.

With Rafael Leao edging closer to the exit, Milan’s hierarchy have turned again to a familiar face. According to Corriere della Sera, the Rossoneri have set their sights on Brahim Diaz, the Real Madrid playmaker who knows San Siro, and its demands, better than most.

Milan missed out on one of their primary targets, Konstantinos Karetsas, after the highly rated Greek teenager chose Borussia Dortmund, completing a move from Genk worth 33 million euros. That deal forced the club to adjust quickly. The response has been clear: go for a player who can walk straight into the team and the dressing room without an adaptation period.

Brahim fits that brief perfectly. Between 2020 and 2023, the Moroccan international carved out a key role in Milan’s resurgence. On loan from Real Madrid, he played 124 matches, scored 18 goals and provided 15 assists. He was not just a squad player; he was part of the core that drove the club back to the top, helping deliver the Serie A title in 2022.

That history matters. It matters to a club trying to refresh its attack without ripping out its identity.

The obstacle, of course, lies in Madrid. Brahim is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2027, and Real are under no pressure to sell. Juventus had explored the idea of bringing him to Turin earlier in the window before switching their attention to Bayer Leverkusen’s Karim Alaibegovic, leaving Milan with a little more room to manoeuvre, but far from a free run.

Brahim is not the only name on the list. Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, one of the brightest young prospects in England, remains under close observation, as does Roma’s Matias Soule, who impressed on loan last season and has drawn admiring glances across Serie A. Milan are keeping several doors open, but the one that leads back to Brahim is the most familiar and, in many ways, the most tempting.

Leao at the crossroads

All of this, though, sits in the shadow of one huge question: what happens with Rafael Leao?

Inside the club, his future dominates every conversation. The Portuguese forward has been at Milan for seven years, a stretch that has seen him grow from raw talent into one of Europe’s most devastating wide attackers. Now, he believes that chapter is closing.

Leao’s first ambition was clear. He wanted a move to the Premier League or La Liga, a leap into one of the two financial and sporting superpowers of the modern game. The market, so far, has not answered that call. No concrete offers have arrived from England or Spain, leaving a player of his stature in an unexpected limbo.

That pause has opened the door to a different scenario: Turkey.

Galatasaray are preparing their move, armed with the kind of leverage that matters most to a player of Leao’s profile – Champions League football. Their qualification for Europe’s top competition gives them a clear edge over domestic rivals Fenerbahce and turns their interest into something more serious than speculation.

Leao is listening. He likes the project, he likes the stage, and he knows Galatasaray can offer him a central role and a fervent platform. But this is not a small deal. The winger is demanding a salary north of 10 million euros per year, a figure that underlines both his self-belief and the scale of the commitment any buyer must make.

Milan’s stance is equally firm. They are not interested in loan formulas or temporary fixes. If Leao leaves, it has to be a permanent sale, a clean break that brings in the funds required to reshape the attack and, potentially, to finance a move for a player like Brahim Diaz.

That is the trade-off facing the Rossoneri: lose their most explosive weapon on the flank to rebuild the heart of their attack, or hold on to Leao and risk missing the chance to refresh an area of the pitch that has lacked consistency since his peak years under Stefano Pioli.

The clock is ticking. The market rarely waits, and Milan must decide how much of their future they are willing to stake on one last season from their star winger – or whether the time has truly come to cash in and start a new chapter.
