Michael Carrick Praises Man Utd Midfield Partnership of Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans
Carrick Applauds Emerging Midfield Duo at Manchester United
Michael Carrick has expressed his satisfaction with the growing partnership between Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans after their impressive performances helped secure a strong win against Sabah. The manager is thrilled with how his midfield is shaping up alongside the promising return of Benjamin Sesko.
Mainoo and Tielemans Anchor Midfield
For the third straight match, Carrick entrusted Mainoo and Tielemans to control the midfield, resulting in a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime. Their dominance in the centre allowed Carrick to make several substitutions and rest key players ahead of a busy schedule. The pair are quickly becoming the preferred central midfield combination, showing growing understanding and tactical discipline that underpin the team's early success this season.
Squad Rotation Strengthens Options
The first-half control gave Carrick confidence to bring on Mason Mount for his season debut, while Andrey Santos replaced Mainoo midway through the second half. Carrick praised all four midfielders who featured, saying:
"I think all four midfielders tonight carried on the same way. Mason coming on at half-time and Andrey settling in fantastically well. Kobbie and Youri have played more minutes, and you can see the understanding. Youri settled in and was really good again tonight. Kobbie has been very consistent throughout, so we have great options and good understanding between them."
Sesko Adds Another Dimension Up Front
While the midfield laid the groundwork, the attack remained clinical. Sesko scored in his first start of the season, netting for the second match running. The Slovenian forward had missed pre-season due to a shin injury but is quickly regaining the sharpness he showed last campaign under Carrick's guidance.
"He offers a different kind of threat," said Carrick. "Not many players give what Ben does in terms of physique, physicality, playing on the last line, and speed to run behind defenders. It's great to have him back after working on his fitness. A couple of goals and good performances already — really pleased with his progress."
Building Depth for the Season Ahead
The coaching staff will continue to manage Sesko’s minutes carefully as he regains full match fitness. With Mount returning from injury and Santos integrating well, the squad now boasts considerable depth. Carrick has multiple dependable midfield and attacking options to handle the demanding fixtures ahead.
