Mexico Advances to Round of 16 as All Teams from Germany's Group Are Eliminated

Mexico secured their place in the Round of 16 with first-half goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, who had also scored in their opening victory against South Africa. This win came at the expense of Ecuador, ending their run in the tournament.

Seventeen-year-old Mexican midfielder Gilberto Mora made history by becoming the first player since Pele in 1958 to start in a knockout stage match at such a young age. This milestone added an extra layer of excitement to Mexico’s campaign.

The outcome means every team from Germany’s group has now been knocked out before advancing past the first knockout round. The four-time world champions suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, while Côte d'Ivoire bowed out following a late goal from Norway’s Erling Haaland. Meanwhile, all teams from Group F were eliminated after losses to the Netherlands, Japan, and Sweden.

Ecuador finished their World Cup without scoring in three of their four matches, with their only goal coming during a 2-1 victory over Germany. In contrast, Mexico remains the sole team yet to concede a goal throughout the competition.

A tense moment unfolded in injury time when former Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié was shown a red card for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent. Despite this, Mexico will continue to enjoy strong home support as they prepare to face the winner between England and DR Congo in the next round.
