Memphis Depay Defends Controversial Music Video Amid Corinthians Turmoil

Memphis Depay has moved to defend his latest music video after scenes of Corinthians’ headquarters engulfed in flames sparked anger around the Brazilian club.

The Netherlands international, who combines his football career with a growing presence in music, released the video for his track Don’t Panic just 24 hours after helping Corinthians reach the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores. The timing could hardly have been more explosive.

In the clip, Depay is shown watching Parque São Jorge, the club’s administrative center, burning. The imagery lands only days after a tense contract stand-off and at a moment when Corinthians fans are already on edge over ownership, finances and governance.

Depay’s deal had appeared to be over when the club chose not to renew it last week. By Tuesday, the situation flipped: the former Manchester United forward agreed to take what has been described as a “significant” pay cut to remain at Corinthians.

Then came the video.

The track is laced with pointed lines. Depay talks about “rivals” and raps: “I know a vice-president who is now my enemy.” He does not name anyone, but the references were always going to be read through the lens of his recent dispute with the club.

With supporters already staging protests against the hierarchy and more demonstrations expected, the imagery of the headquarters in flames struck a raw nerve. Depay moved quickly to calm the reaction, stressing that the video was not a response to the latest turmoil.

He said on social media that the piece was filmed “months ago” and urged fans to keep any protests peaceful, saying he hoped people could express themselves “calmly”. On the controversy around the burning building, the Dutch forward insisted it was symbolic rather than a call to action, describing the video as “just art”.

Depay also underlined that he is “fully against any type of violence of all kind”, distancing himself from any suggestion that the scenes should be taken literally.

For a player who has just sacrificed a chunk of his salary to stay, Depay now finds himself walking a tightrope: key man on the pitch, outspoken artist off it, and right in the middle of a club fighting its own fires.
