Barcelona's New Midfield General Rodri Set to Debut Soon

Barcelona will have to wait to unveil their marquee midfield signing.

Hansi Flick confirmed on Saturday that Rodri, recruited from Manchester City in a deal that could climb to 76.5 million euros, will not feature in the LaLiga champions’ opener against Elche on Sunday.

“He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” Flick told reporters. “This is the plan. He's a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.”

The target now is Barcelona’s second league outing, away to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, when the Spanish World Cup winner could make his debut and begin the task of anchoring Flick’s new-look midfield.

Striker search continues after big departures

Rodri’s arrival plugs one gap, but another remains glaring.

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres both gone, Barcelona are still combing the market for a centre-forward. Flick kept his cards close to his chest when asked who would lead the line at Elche, yet one name has forced its way into the conversation over the summer: Hamza Abdelkarim.

The 18-year-old Egyptian has lit up pre-season with four goals in friendlies, earning a public endorsement from his coach.

“Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” said Flick. “He's a No 9, he's young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you're playing in this position, and he made a great job.”

Hamza is not the only option. New wingers Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi can both operate centrally as false nines, while Raphinha and Dani Olmo also offer flexibility through the middle. Flick has variety, if not yet a like-for-like replacement for Lewandowski.

Cancelo ready, Rodri waits

One new face will be on the pitch at the Martinez Valero.

Joao Cancelo, signed this week to strengthen the full-back positions, is available to play and has already impressed his new coach.

“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” Flick added.

So Barcelona open their title defence with their new defensive weapon ready, their new midfield general watching on, and a vacancy still looming at No 9. The question now is who seizes that space before the transfer window slams shut.
