Marc Guiu's Chelsea Exit Looms as Napoli Pursues Young Striker

Marc Guiu’s brief Chelsea spell is close to being cut short, with Napoli pushing to take the young striker before the transfer window shuts.

The 20-year-old is weighing up three concrete options, with clubs from Italy, Spain and Germany all in the mix. Some want him on loan, others are ready to buy. Chelsea are listening to both.

Napoli are exploring a permanent deal and see Guiu as a long-term project rather than a short-term stopgap. The Spanish forward scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions last season, flashes of promise in a campaign where minutes were hard to come by.

The Serie A side are already deep in business with Chelsea. Benoit Badiashile is heading to Naples on an initial season-long loan, and Napoli have also looked at Nicolas Jackson. That pursuit has stalled, though, once they were met with Chelsea’s £65million valuation.

Guiu, signed from Barcelona in 2024 for £5m, is now valued at around £25m. That is a hefty mark-up for a player who has struggled for game time at Stamford Bridge and underlines Chelsea’s determination to turn a profit even on short-term projects.

What makes his situation clearer is Xabi Alonso’s stance. The La Masia graduate is not part of the new head coach’s first-team plans this season. He was not even given a shirt number ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League game against Fulham on Monday night, a blunt signal of where he stands in the pecking order.

Alonso reshapes his attack

Chelsea are actively trimming a bloated forward line in the final week of the window. Jackson, Guiu and Liam Delap are all available for the right price as Alonso sharpens his attacking options.

Jackson has no shortage of admirers. Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid are among the clubs tracking the Senegal international, who could yet be the most high-profile departure from Chelsea’s front line if someone steps up to meet the asking price.

Delap’s market is just as busy, if not as glamorous. Everton, Nottingham Forest and his former club Ipswich are all keen on the 23-year-old. Serie A side Como, who have already taken Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea this summer, are also said to be in the race.

Chelsea’s stance on Delap is uncompromising. Despite him scoring only two goals in all competitions last season, they have set a £50m price tag. The club paid £30m to beat Manchester United to his signature last summer and are intent on banking a sizeable profit. Any deal will also have to factor in a sell-on clause that Ipswich inserted when they sold him to Chelsea last year.

Joao Pedro the new focal point

All of this movement comes with one clear conclusion: Chelsea’s attack will be built around Joao Pedro.

The Brazilian has impressed since arriving from Brighton last summer and has been rewarded with a new long-term contract running to 2034, complete with a pay rise and improved terms. He goes into the new campaign as Alonso’s first-choice striker, the man the club have chosen to trust.

As Joao Pedro steps into that role, space is running out for the rest. For Guiu, the next decision looks decisive: stay and fight for scraps, or jump now to a club willing to build around him. Napoli, and others, are waiting for his answer.
