Mbappé Joins Raúl in Champions League History

Kylian Mbappé’s start to the 2026-27 season has turned into a weekly ritual: new game, same outcome, another goal.

On Tuesday night, in Real Madrid’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan, the Frenchman needed just 14 minutes to leave his mark. One loose touch from Curtis Jones was all the invitation he required. Brahim Díaz pounced on the turnover and slipped the ball into Mbappé’s path.

One touch. One finish. 1-0.

Mbappé swept his shot first time past Josep Martínez, no hesitation, no extra flourish – the sort of cold, efficient strike that has become his trademark on these nights. It was his fifth goal in five games this season and, more significantly, his 71st in the Champions League.

That number matters. It drags him level with Real Madrid icon Raúl on the all-time scoring list, joint-fifth in competition history. Different eras, different styles, same ruthless production on Europe’s biggest stage.

The scale of the climb still ahead of him is clear. Cristiano Ronaldo sits alone at the top with 140 Champions League goals, amassed across spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Mbappé, now 27, has time, but also a mountain to chase.

Madrid, though, were not interested in milestones alone. They wanted control of the group, and they moved towards it nine minutes after the opener.

This time it was Inter’s goalkeeper who blinked. Martínez hesitated, Federico Valverde did not. The Uruguayan surged in, nicked the ball away and stabbed it into the net for 2-0, punishing a mistake that the Bernabéu – and European competition – rarely forgives.

Inter finally broke through late on, pulling a goal back to make it 2-1 and injecting tension into what had looked like a comfortable night. Madrid, 15-time European champions and veterans of this kind of pressure, absorbed the late surge and saw the game out.

No drama at the end. Just a narrow win, three points, and the familiar feeling that when Mbappé starts a Champions League campaign this sharply, the entire competition has to take notice.
