Mattie Pollock Faces Pressure as Watford Captain

Mattie Pollock has only just taken the armband at Watford, but he already sounds like a man carrying the weight of a restless club.

The Hornets slipped to 18th in the early Championship standings after Saturday’s narrow defeat at West Brom, a result that stretched their winless run to five matches in all competitions. The optimism of opening day, when they swept aside Southampton to launch the 2026-27 campaign, feels a long way off.

Since that bright start, Watford have drawn two and lost two in the league. A heavily rotated side were also thrashed 5-1 by Peterborough in the EFL Cup last month, a bruising night that only deepened concerns about depth and resilience.

Pivotal Week Ahead

Now comes a pivotal week at Vicarage Road.

Alessio Dionisi’s team host Preston on Tuesday before Stoke City arrive on Saturday. Back-to-back home fixtures, back-to-back pressure points.

“They're two massive games,” captain Pollock told BBC Three Counties Radio. “We've come up short in the last two away games, so we've got to make sure we put things right in front of our crowd and get the fans with us.”

That theme of unity ran through every word. Pollock, appointed skipper in July, knows the table is still “formative”, but also that anxiety can spread quickly if results don’t turn.

“I'll do everything in my power to make sure the lads stick together,” he said. “We came up short at the weekend, but if we can start scoring goals and winning games, then it can still be an exciting season.”

For Watford, the message is clear. The slide has to stop now, on their own pitch, with their captain demanding a response.
