Man City Predicted XI vs Coventry: Enzo Fernandez to Debut

Manchester City have thrown money at the squad. Now Enzo Maresca has to make it all make sense.

After a frantic Deadline Day that delivered Enzo Fernandez, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi, City walk into Saturday’s meeting with Coventry armed with depth, options and a few uncomfortable calls. The chequebook is closed. The scrutiny isn’t.

Fernandez reshapes the midfield

Fernandez is the marquee arrival. The £125m British record-equalling signing hasn’t come to watch from the bench, and he is expected to walk straight into the XI for his Etihad debut.

His presence changes everything in the middle of the pitch. Marc Guehi’s brief audition as a holding midfielder looks done already – a worthwhile trial, but only that. With Fernandez available, City can restore a more orthodox structure in midfield, with Elliot Anderson likely to sit alongside him and give the side some balance and legs.

That security behind the ball ramps up the stakes further forward. Rayan Cherki has opened the season brightly, Phil Foden remains one of the club’s crown jewels, and neither can relax. Those attacking midfield berths are suddenly crowded. This is exactly the level of internal competition City wanted when they sanctioned such an aggressive window.

Ndiaye, signed for up to £65m, may have to bide his time. Bouaddi, a hefty £86m investment, also seems more likely to start among the substitutes. When a squad is stacked like this, reputations and price tags collide with reality: there are only 11 shirts.

Defence finally finds some rhythm

Behind them, the back line is beginning to take on a settled look after weeks of tinkering.

Abdukodir Khusanov is set to continue on the right of defence, with Ruben Dias and Guehi expected to form the central pairing. Josko Gvardiol should hold his place on the left. It feels more stable than the revolving-door selections that marked the early weeks of the campaign, and that matters against a Coventry side who will seize on any uncertainty.

City don’t just need control in possession; they need a platform that doesn’t creak at the first sign of pressure. This back four, on paper at least, offers that.

Injury picture and likely XI

Matheus Nunes remains a doubt and may not be risked. Jeremy Doku is still out with the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield, so the wide options are trimmed even if the squad as a whole looks lavish.

All signs point to Maresca lining up like this:
