Mason Greenwood Transfers to Fenerbahce After Marseille Spell
Mason Greenwood’s Marseille chapter is over. His next act takes him to one of football’s most feverish stages.
Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the permanent transfer of the 24-year-old forward to Fenerbahce, ending a two-season spell in the south of France that was as productive on the pitch as it was turbulent off it.
Marseille cash out at the peak
The club’s statement was formal and grateful, but also definitive. Greenwood, signed in the summer of 2024, leaves after two campaigns in which he became one of Ligue 1’s most ruthless finishers.
His numbers tell the story.
- Year one: 22 goals and six assists in 36 appearances, driving Marseille to second place and a return to the Champions League.
- Year two: he went up another gear, with 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 games across all competitions.
That output put him among the elite in France. His technical polish, ability to create space in tight areas and unerring finishing earned him a place among the five finalists for the UNFP Player of the Season award. On the pitch, he was the reference point of Marseille’s attack.
Behind the scenes, it was far less smooth. Reports of disciplinary issues and tension with former sporting director Medhi Benatia never truly went away. The club, aware that his market value might never be higher, chose their moment to sell.
The official line was clear: this was a joint decision. “This decision is the result of a joint discussion between the player and the club, who mutually agreed to end their collaboration,” Marseille said, thanking Greenwood for his two seasons and wishing him success.
Lorenzi lifts the lid
New sporting director Grégory Lorenzi, speaking in his first press conference, offered a more pointed glimpse into how the deal unfolded.
“I think you all know the complexities of the Greenwood deal with the image of the player,” he said, underlining the baggage that has followed the former Manchester United forward. He made it plain that the initiative came from Greenwood’s side: “The player wanted to leave the club as quick as possible.”
On the finances, Lorenzi pushed back at speculation. “The numbers are communicated by people that don’t have the right information. All I can say is that the club got what it wanted,” he insisted, while admitting Marseille had expected more suitors: “Okay, we thought that more clubs were going to knock on the door. So the best option was this club that the player absolutely wanted to go to.”
That club turned out not to be the one many expected.
Atletico snubbed, Fenerbahce pounce
For weeks, Atletico Madrid looked in control of the race. Diego Simeone’s side saw Greenwood as a long-term heir to Antoine Griezmann, a forward capable of operating across the front line and supplying the goals and invention to refresh an ageing attack.
Then the move collapsed. Dramatically.
Atleti, according to reports, felt “disrespected” by the lack of communication from the player’s camp in the final stages of talks. Negotiations stalled, patience snapped, and a deal that had seemed close to completion suddenly disintegrated.
Fenerbahce did not hesitate. As Atletico stepped away, the Istanbul giants stepped in, exploiting the vacuum and moving decisively to close an agreement with Marseille and the player.
The Turkish club have committed to a €39 million fee, to be paid over three years in equal instalments. For Fenerbahce, it is a clear statement: they intend to reassert their authority at the top of Turkish football and sharpen their edge in Europe with a marquee signing in his prime.
A new focal point in Istanbul
Greenwood has signed a four-year contract and will be the centrepiece of Fenerbahce’s attack. The expectation is simple: he becomes the main man.
His first words to the club’s supporters left no doubt about how he views the move. “It was a no-brainer when they were interested in me,” he said in an official video message. “It’s the biggest club in Turkey and I can’t wait to get started.”
From Getafe to Marseille and now to Istanbul, Greenwood has built a career on adapting quickly and scoring consistently in new environments. La Liga, Ligue 1, and now the Super Lig: three countries down, a fourth major European league on the horizon.
He arrives in Turkey with goals, controversy, and a point to prove. Fenerbahce are betting that, in one of the sport’s most intense atmospheres, his next chapter will be defined by what happens between the white lines.
