Martin Terrier's Potential Return to Ligue 1: Rennes and Marseille Interested
Martin Terrier’s German adventure may be heading for an early curtain call. Two years after swapping Rennes for Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, the French forward is in talks over a return to Ligue 1, with both Rennes and Marseille pushing to bring him home.
It has been a bruising spell in the Bundesliga. Terrier, 29, has never really settled with the Werkself, scoring just seven goals in 44 appearances. Any rhythm he tried to build was shattered by injuries, including a serious Achilles tear last year that stalled his momentum at the worst possible time.
On paper, Leverkusen are still committed. Terrier has three years left on his contract. On the pitch, the story feels very different. The prospect of a fresh start back in France appeals to a player who, despite never being capped by the senior France team, once looked like one of Ligue 1’s most polished attackers.
Rennes know that version of Terrier better than anyone. He spent three standout seasons in Brittany, where his movement, finishing and intelligence between the lines turned him into a key figure. Those “remarkable campaigns” have left a lasting imprint at Roazhon Park, and talks are under way over a reunion.
There is also a strategic angle for Les Bretons. With Switzerland international Breel Embolo attracting interest, Rennes could soon find themselves short of firepower. Bringing back a proven, club-tested forward who already understands the environment would be a logical way to soften any blow.
But the path back to Rennes is not clear-cut. Marseille have stepped into the frame and are ready to test Terrier’s loyalties and ambitions.
OM, like Rennes, will play in the UEFA Europa League and need to rebuild their attack. The departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mason Greenwood have left Bruno Genesio short of a focal point in the final third. A versatile forward who can operate across the line and link play suddenly looks less like a luxury and more like a necessity.
Genesio knows exactly what he would be buying. He coached Terrier during the forward’s peak years at Rennes between 2021 and 2023, a period when the player’s maturity and end product sharpened under his guidance. That shared history gives Marseille a powerful card to play: a manager who already trusts him and a system in which he has previously thrived.
So Terrier stands at a crossroads. Stay in Germany and fight for relevance in a squad that has moved on without him, or return to Ligue 1 where two ambitious clubs are ready to rebuild around his qualities.
Rennes can offer familiarity and the comfort of a place where he once shone. Marseille can offer the roar of the Vélodrome and the pull of a club that lives permanently on the edge of glory and crisis.
For a player whose career has been stalled by injury and frustration, the next move will say a lot about how high he still aims to climb.
