Marcus Rashford's Return: Facing AC Milan in Pre-Season Showdown

Marcus Rashford is back in the Manchester United spotlight this afternoon – and the script could hardly be sharper.

Michael Carrick has named the winger in his travelling squad to face AC Milan in Wroclaw, United’s final pre-season outing before the serious business begins. On paper, it is just another warm-up game. In reality, it is loaded with history.

Rashford, Amorim and a fractured past

Rashford’s inclusion matters because of the man now in the opposite dugout. Ruben Amorim, appointed AC Milan head coach earlier this summer, oversaw one of the most turbulent chapters of Rashford’s United career.

Their relationship at Old Trafford broke down in brutal fashion. During an underwhelming spell in charge, Amorim clashed badly with the forward, a fall-out that appeared to close the door on Rashford’s time at his boyhood club.

The flashpoint came around the Manchester derby in December 2024. Amorim dropped Rashford for the game and then banished him from training altogether. For a 28-year-old forward who had grown up at United, it felt like exile.

By January, he was gone. Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the season, a move that looked less like a reset and more like the beginning of a permanent separation.

Loans, rejection and an unexpected return

The following summer brought another twist. On returning from Villa, Rashford did not rejoin the core group. Instead, he was placed in a so‑called “Bomb Squad” and shipped out again, this time to Barcelona on a season-long loan.

While Rashford tried to rebuild in Spain, events moved quickly back in Manchester. Amorim was sacked by United and replaced by Michael Carrick, a change that quietly altered the forward’s prospects without him kicking a ball for his parent club.

Barcelona had the option to make the deal permanent for £26m at the end of last season. Many expected them to take it. They chose not to. Instead, the Catalan club turned to Anthony Gordon and left Rashford’s future wide open.

That decision sent him back to Manchester. After the World Cup, Rashford returned to United and linked up with the squad in Dublin this week. He did not feature against Leeds, but Carrick has now taken a clear step by bringing him to Poland for the Milan clash.

Fans make their feelings clear

If there were any doubts about how supporters feel, the numbers cut through the noise.

Asked by MEN Sport whether Rashford should play against AC Milan on Saturday, United fans delivered a resounding verdict. Out of 2,799 votes at the time of writing, 84 per cent said “Yes”. Only 13 per cent felt he should not play, while three per cent were unsure.

For a player who has been frozen out, loaned out and written off in some quarters, that is a powerful show of backing.

Mainoo, JJ Gabriel and a different era

Rashford will not be the only familiar face confronting old scars. Kobbie Mainoo is also in the travelling squad, another young talent who endured a difficult spell under Amorim’s regime at Old Trafford.

There is a different feel around United now. Carrick has begun to shape a new dressing-room atmosphere, and his squad for Wroclaw underlines that shift. Alongside the established names, teenage sensation JJ Gabriel has earned another chance with the first team, a sign that the pathway for emerging talent remains open.

So United head into their final pre-season fixture with subplots everywhere: a new manager in Carrick, an old one in Amorim, a fanbase firmly behind a returning star, and a winger with a point to prove against the coach who once froze him out.

This is only pre-season on the calendar. For Marcus Rashford, it feels like the start of something far more decisive.
