Marc Guiu Joins RB Leipzig: A New Chapter After Chelsea

Chelsea have agreed to sell Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig in a permanent deal, drawing a sharp line under a brief and curious chapter in the young striker’s career at Stamford Bridge.

The move, kept almost entirely out of the public eye until late in the week, burst into view when Fabrizio Romano delivered his trademark “here we go”, confirming that club and player had reached full agreement with Leipzig.

Guiu is now expected to travel to Germany to complete his medical and sign his contract before the transfer window shuts. The fee remains undisclosed, but Chelsea have inserted a sell-on clause, protecting a slice of any future profit if Leipzig develop him into the striker many in Spain thought he would become.

A quiet exit after a whirlwind arrival

The speed of Guiu’s Chelsea story is striking. He arrived from Barcelona in July 2024 after the Premier League club triggered his €6 million release clause, prising away a La Masia forward who had already made headlines in Catalonia.

At Barça, Guiu announced himself in style. He scored on his first-team debut against Athletic Club in October 2023 and later found the net in the Champions League, fuelling talk of another academy gem ready to explode on the European stage.

Chelsea pounced. Yet in west London, his trajectory never quite matched the early noise.

He showed flashes. Real ones. A first-half hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers in the 2024-25 UEFA Conference League underlined his penalty-box instincts, and he added another goal against Ajax in the Champions League. When the ball came his way in the area, he looked like he belonged.

What he never truly earned was a consistent Premier League platform.

Loans, recalls and a shrinking pathway

Chelsea sent Guiu on loan to Sunderland in August 2025, a move designed to give him regular minutes and rough edges in the Championship. It barely got started. An injury to Liam Delap forced Chelsea into a swift recall, dragging Guiu back into a crowded attacking department.

He collected more appearances but not a starting berth he could call his own. Cameos replaced continuity, and the promise of a defined role faded as Chelsea’s squad continued to churn.

The reset under new head coach Xabi Alonso at the start of the 2026-27 season sharpened that reality. Guiu did not receive a squad number. Chelsea added further attacking options and made no secret of their desire to trim the group. For a 1.89m centre-forward needing trust and time, the message was clear.

Chelsea had previously explored exits. They had looked for around €25 million from interested clubs and insisted on a sell-on clause in any agreement. Napoli pushed hardest, even reaching personal terms with Guiu, but the two clubs never aligned on a valuation. Manchester City tracked the situation, and Sevilla considered a loan that would have taken him back to Spain, yet none of those paths opened fully.

Leipzig’s next project up front

RB Leipzig have built a reputation for spotting young forwards and turning them into serious assets through regular first-team football. For Guiu, the Bundesliga offers a clean slate and a league that has often been kind to emerging attackers.

He brings size, strength and aerial presence at 1.89m, but also the penalty-box poise that lit up those early nights in Barcelona and on European duty with Chelsea. Leipzig’s track record suggests he will not be short of chances to prove he can translate that into a full season’s worth of goals.

For Chelsea, the deal ticks different boxes. They bank a financial return on a player signed for €6 million and keep a percentage of any future sale through the sell-on clause. In an overstocked squad, one more pathway clears.

The agreement now waits only for formalities: Guiu’s trip to Germany, the medical, the signatures. Once that is done, a short, stop-start stay at Stamford Bridge gives way to a new test in the Bundesliga.
