Julián Álvarez can see the door. It just isn’t the one he wants.

Atlético Madrid have shut down any possibility of their Argentine forward joining Barcelona this summer, hardening a stance that leaves Arsenal as the only realistic way out with five days left in the window. The battle is no longer just about football; it is tangled in politics, rivalry and paperwork.

Atlético draw a red line

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Atlético’s position could not be clearer: Álvarez will not be sold to Barcelona. Internally, the message is described as absolute – the “chance of selling him to Barcelona equals zero.”

The player, though, has not given up on that move. He has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, holding on to the hope that Barcelona can somehow break Atlético’s resistance before the deadline.

If anything, the stand-off has only hardened. Joan Laporta publicly insisted Barcelona would keep pushing for Álvarez until the final day of the market. Atlético responded by digging in. The board released a statement backing the refusal to negotiate with the Catalan club, and relations between the two institutions have grown increasingly strained.

From flashpoint to fallout

Álvarez’s future in Madrid was already under scrutiny before this latest escalation. The turning point came in the league clash against Villarreal, when Atlético fans jeered their own star. He walked off alone and headed straight to the dressing room, a solitary exit that felt like more than just frustration in the moment.

Since then, the idea of a clean break has hung over the Metropolitano. Just not to Barcelona.

Atlético are prepared to sell him abroad for 150 million euros. That figure sets a high bar, but it also draws a clear line: if Álvarez is to leave, it will be outside Spain.

Arsenal sense an opening

This is where Arsenal step in.

The Premier League side are closely monitoring the situation and are viewed as the most credible destination if Álvarez leaves. The Argentine is attracted by the sporting project in north London, where a young, ambitious squad and Champions League football offer a compelling platform.

Arsenal believe a deal is possible before the window shuts on September 1. They have not yet submitted a decisive, formal bid to Atlético, but their interest is strong and their confidence real.

Yet the main complication right now does not concern tactics, systems or fee structures. It concerns visas.

Brexit, family and the fine print

Álvarez’s family live with him in Spain. Any move to London would mean uprooting them again, and post-Brexit immigration rules in the United Kingdom have tightened significantly.

Some of his relatives saw their residency permits expire after his previous spell in England, creating extra hurdles if they are to return. That reality weighs on the player’s decision-making and forms a key part of the negotiations behind the scenes.

There is one ray of clarity. Journalist Verónica Brunati has explained that Álvarez’s wife can obtain residency as the dependent partner of someone holding a work visa, which would allow her to live with him legally in the UK. That eases one concern but does not solve the entire family picture.

Arsenal, for their part, are confident they can navigate the bureaucracy. The club believe they can manage the visa process for Álvarez and his family if he agrees to join them at the Emirates Stadium, smoothing out the off-pitch issues that currently cloud the move.

For now, though, everything rests on two hard realities: Atlético will not deal with Barcelona, and Arsenal have yet to put the kind of offer on the table that forces the Spanish club’s hand.

Five days remain. One exit route is blocked, another is open but untraveled. The next move belongs to Arsenal – and to Álvarez himself.
