Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona: A Fight for His Position

Alejandro Balde’s future at Barcelona has been thrown into doubt in the final days of the summer window, with Manchester United circling and Hansi Flick turning up the competitive heat inside the dressing room.

The 20-year-old left-back is understood to be happy at Barça, but he met with his agent this week to discuss his situation. The message from the club is simple: the door is not closed. If Balde feels his role will shrink this season, especially after João Cancelo’s permanent return, a departure remains on the table.

"It's a difficult question because he's a player of immense quality, and it's important to know if he's confident he can compete in his position. That's what I want to see from all my players. Every day I observe what they do, their level, whether they demonstrate that they're at the level to play. Ultimately, we have to play as a team; only then will we achieve success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent."

He could have offered a straightforward endorsement. He didn’t. No “Balde is untouchable.” No “He must stay.”

Instead, Flick’s answer sounded like a challenge. Stay and fight, or step aside.

The German coach has been consistent since arriving: no guaranteed places, no comfort zones. He wants ferocious competition in every role. If a player is content to sit as a backup, the message from the bench is blunt – this might not be the place for you.

For Balde, once hailed as the long-term solution on the left, the question now is not just whether Barcelona want him. It’s whether he is ready to embrace that fight with Cancelo and the rest, or whether this transfer window becomes the moment he chooses a different path.
