Manchester United Hosts Sabah in Landmark Champions League Encounter

Manchester United Prepares for Historic Champions League Clash with Sabah

This Thursday, Manchester United will face Sabah as the Champions League returns to Old Trafford for the first time since 2023. The match marks a debut meeting between the Red Devils and the Azerbaijan club, which was only established in 2017.

First Ever Meeting Between These Clubs

The matchup is notable as Manchester United has never before faced a team from Azerbaijan. While Qarabağ FK is the Azerbaijani club with the most European competition experience, having reached last season's Champions League knockout stages before being defeated by Newcastle United, Sabah is making its first appearance beyond the qualifying rounds of a major European tournament. They have previously competed in the Conference League and Europa League but are newcomers to this level.

Champions League Debuts for Several United Players

Since Manchester United last played in the Champions League in December 2023 against Bayern Munich, many players on their current roster have yet to experience the competition. Key attacker Bryan Mbeumo and goalkeeper Senne Lammens are among those seeing their first action at this stage. Defender Leny Yoro, who previously played in the Conference League with LOSC Lille and the Europa League with United, will also be making his Champions League debut.

Michael Carrick’s Unblemished Record in European Management

As a player, Michael Carrick enjoyed significant success in the Champions League, winning the tournament in 2008 and reaching finals in 2009 and 2011 with Manchester United. His managerial experience in Europe is limited but impressive; in his initial stint as caretaker manager in 2021, he led United to a crucial 2-0 victory away against Villarreal. This match will also represent Carrick’s first European home game as United’s manager.
