Manchester United Reject Djed Spence Move as Inter Milan Steps In

Manchester United’s search for a new full-back has taken another twist – and this time it ends in Milan, not Manchester.

INEOS, now steering football decisions at Old Trafford, have decided against a move for England international Djed Spence, despite being offered the Tottenham defender earlier in the window, according to TEAMtalk. United’s hierarchy, already uneasy about Luke Shaw’s recurring fitness issues, are scouring the market for cover and competition on the left, with Lewis Hall high on their list.

Newcastle United, though, have dug their heels in over Hall. That stance has forced United to scan the market for alternatives and listen to proposals. Spence was one of those opportunities placed in front of them – and swiftly pushed away.

Tottenham’s price kills Premier League interest

Spurs tested the water across the Premier League. Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Everton were all offered the chance to sign the 26-year-old after his impressive World Cup campaign.

The response was almost unanimous.

Tottenham’s initial asking price of around £45 million was judged excessive by every suitor. No one bit. No deal, no formal breakthrough, just a shared feeling that Spurs were asking for too much.

United, like the rest, walked away.

Inter strike at lower fee

While English clubs hesitated, Inter Milan moved with conviction. Sky Sports report that Inter have agreed a £30 million deal with Tottenham for Spence, a full-back comfortable on either flank. The agreement includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

The numbers tell their own story. Spurs’ £45 million demand to Premier League rivals collapses into a £30 million agreement with a European giant. Once again, United find themselves staring at a familiar theme: when Old Trafford comes calling, the price often goes up.

Spence, instead of becoming part of the INEOS rebuild in Manchester, will now join a reshaped Inter back line in Serie A.

United’s left-back puzzle grows

For United, the refusal to move on Spence is part of a broader pattern this summer. The club also turned down the chance to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal, another highly rated young option. At the same time, academy left-back Harry Amass is expected to depart, thinning the homegrown options just as the need for depth becomes more urgent.

All of this points back to one name: Lewis Hall. Inside Old Trafford, there is still a belief that Hall can be prised away from Newcastle, despite the Magpies’ current resistance. United’s restraint on Spence and Lewis-Skelly suggests they are keeping their powder dry for that battle.

Contingency plans are already in place. INEOS have lined up lower-cost alternatives such as David Raum, Jorge Salinas and Joaquin Seys, should Newcastle refuse to budge.

United have made their call on Djed Spence. Inter Milan will benefit from it. The real question now is whether their gamble on waiting for Lewis Hall pays off, or leaves them scrambling as the window ticks towards its close.
