Liverpool's Defensive Rebuild: Araujo and Potential Kounde Move

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild may not be finished with Ronald Araujo. Another call to Barcelona could yet define the club’s summer.

The back line remains thin. Too thin for a side with Liverpool’s ambitions. Araujo’s arrival on loan has eased one headache at centre-back, but it has not cured the long-running problem on the right.

The deal for the Uruguayan only materialised when Hansi Flick made a brutal decision. Araujo was told he did not fit into Barcelona’s plans for the new season. A player who had been prepared to stay at the Nou Camp for the long term suddenly had a choice to make. He chose Anfield, and the move was wrapped up quickly.

For Liverpool, it was an opportunity that simply did not exist a few weeks earlier. The kind of late-window chaos that is starting to grip Europe opened a door, and the club stepped through it.

Araujo fills a glaring gap in the middle of defence and can slide across to right-back when required. That flexibility matters. But it is a stopgap, not a strategy.

Right-back has been a worry for more than a season. Conor Bradley’s long-term injury has stripped away one option. Jeremie Frimpong’s recurring fitness issues have raised doubts about another. The flank has felt fragile, patched up rather than protected.

So attention has turned back to Barcelona again.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Jules Kounde could be available before the window shuts. Liverpool are named among the clubs watching closely, with Manchester City and Arsenal also credited with interest. The stakes are obvious: sign Kounde, and Liverpool would address both short-term vulnerability and long-term planning in one move.

Kounde is primarily a right-back for Barcelona, but his history at Sevilla and in Catalonia shows he is equally comfortable at centre-back. That dual role would give Andoni Iraola exactly what every modern coach craves — a defender who can do more than one job at an elite level.

The French international, 27, has become a regular presence for the Blaugrana since his switch from Sevilla. He has been trusted heavily, particularly under Flick, whose aggressive, high-pressing approach demands intensity, concentration and resilience. On paper, that profile drops neatly into what Iraola wants at Liverpool.

Flick’s assessment of Kounde earlier this year underlined the point. “Jules is a fighter,” he said. “He’s always focused. We’re all human, and sometimes you don’t have your best day, but he’s always fighting. Even when things don’t start well. I appreciate what he’s doing. He has a top-notch mentality.”

That mentality is exactly the type Liverpool have targeted in recent windows — robust characters as much as talented footballers.

Whether Barcelona are ready to cash in, and at what price, is another matter. Liverpool still have other areas to address in this window and are unlikely to throw their entire remaining budget at right-back without careful calculation.

But as the market becomes more frantic and big clubs scramble to balance squads and books, chances like Araujo and potentially Kounde appear and disappear in days, not weeks.

Liverpool have already taken one swing at Barcelona’s defence.

The question now is whether they go back in for the one player who could lock down their back line for years.
