Manchester United Names 15-Year-Old JJ Gabriel in Squad for Atletico Madrid

Manchester United’s pre-season steps into sharper focus on Saturday, and a 15-year-old will be right in the middle of it.

JJ Gabriel has been named in Michael Carrick’s 23-man squad to face Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, a striking show of faith in the academy forward as United tune up against Diego Simeone’s seasoned La Liga campaigners at the Strawberry Arena.

Gabriel travelled for last week’s 5-0 win over Rosenborg in Trondheim but never made it off the bench, one of only two outfield players not used. He goes again in Sweden, still waiting for a first senior appearance but now doing it against one of Europe’s most battle-hardened sides. For a teenager barely out of school football, it is a serious stage.

Carrick trims the numbers for this leg of the tour. The group is slightly smaller than the parties that went to Helsinki to face Wrexham and then on to Norway, a sign that the coaching staff are narrowing the focus as kick-off to the competitive season draws closer.

Two familiar names rejoin the mix. Altay Bayindir and Amad, back at Carrington at the start of the week after World Cup duty, both travel and will push for minutes. Their return sharpens competition, particularly in goal where Bayindir lines up alongside Tom Heaton, Elyh Mee and Radek Vitek.

Not everyone who checked in this week is ready. Belgian pair Senne Lammens and Youri Tielemans reported on Thursday, but the Atletico fixture comes too early for them, and they stay behind to build fitness.

There is disappointment for others. Gabriel’s inclusion comes as Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Jacob Devaney and Chido Obi drop out of the squad after featuring on the earlier legs of the tour. Jim Thwaites, unused in both games so far, travels again and waits for his chance in a midfield group that also includes J. Fletcher, T. Fletcher, Mason Mount and Santos.

Upcoming Fixture

Atletico represent a clear step up from Rosenborg and Wrexham. Simeone’s side will test United’s defensive organisation and mental sharpness as much as their legs. For Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, listed among the defenders alongside Harry Amass, Jack Armer, Dorgu, Heaven, Kamason and new signing Leny Yoro, it is the kind of examination Carrick will quietly welcome.

This is the phase of pre-season where experiments start to harden into plans. Places are there to be claimed. For Bayindir and Amad, it is a chance to reassert themselves. For Gabriel, still only 15, it is something else entirely: a glimpse of the level he is chasing, and a possible first step into senior football against Atletico Madrid.
