Manchester United's Goalkeeping Reshuffle: Angus Gunn at the Top

Manchester United are preparing a ruthless reset of their goalkeeping department, with Scotland international Angus Gunn emerging as a leading target in a summer of hard decisions at Old Trafford.

Recruitment staff have turned to the experienced shot-stopper as they plan a sweeping overhaul of a hierarchy that could see both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana moved on before the new season kicks off. Gunn, who recently featured for Scotland in World Cup fixtures against Haiti, Morocco and Brazil, has climbed quickly towards the top of United’s list.

His name is not there by chance. The former Norwich City goalkeeper shares a strong historical connection with United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, from their time together at Manchester City’s academy. That familiarity, and a clear understanding of his character and temperament, has pushed Gunn into serious contention as United search for a steady, proven presence behind a young No 1.

Onana and Bayindir pushed towards the exit

The shake-up is not subtle. United have made a firm decision to cash in on both Onana and Bayindir, and the message inside the camp has been blunt.

Onana, the former Inter star signed to great fanfare, has been explicitly informed that the club intend to sell him during the current transfer window. For now, though, he remains on the books and is still scheduled to report back for early pre-season training in two weeks’ time if no deal is finalised.

The situation leaves a curious tension. Onana could yet pull on a United shirt again in friendly fixtures against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18 and Rosenborg on July 24 if his move drags on. For a goalkeeper who arrived as a cornerstone of a new era, those games would carry an unmistakable sense of epilogue.

Bayindir’s path looks more straightforward. Widely expected to return to Turkey, he will come back from an extended three-week post-World Cup holiday, granted after Turkey’s early elimination by Australia and Paraguay, before resolving a likely move to Besiktas. His United career appears to be closing almost as quietly as it began.

Lammens’ rise forces United to think bigger

Amid the churn, one constant has emerged. Young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens has seized the No 1 spot since his debut against Sunderland last October and has not looked back. He is now firmly established as the first choice at Old Trafford.

That rapid rise has impressed decision-makers, but it has also sharpened their sense of responsibility. With elite Champions League football returning to an already congested calendar next season, United cannot afford to gamble on inexperience alone. They want genuine, battle-tested competition for Lammens, not just a body on the bench.

Gunn fits that brief. So does Karl Darlow, the Leeds United veteran who has also been monitored. United are weighing profiles, personalities and price, knowing that whoever comes in must be good enough to play, not simply to train.

Complicating matters further is the stance of Radek Vitek. The young goalkeeper, returning from a loan spell, has made it clear he does not want to come back merely to sit behind others as a backup. His ambition adds another layer to a department already braced for upheaval.

Clock ticking towards Hull

All of this manoeuvring is playing out against a fixed deadline. Whatever shape the goalkeeping group finally takes, it will be tested immediately.

United open their Premier League campaign away at newly promoted Hull City on August 22. By then, the club expect clarity: Lammens entrenched, an experienced rival secured, and the futures of Onana and Bayindir resolved.

The names on the teamsheet that day will tell their own story about how bold this reset truly was.
