Manchester United Abandons €45m Éderson Transfer Deal

Manchester United have walked away from a €45 million move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson, abandoning what had been billed as their first big signing of the summer over concerns about his fitness.

The Brazilian, fresh from World Cup duty and long tracked by United, had been so close to Old Trafford that Fabrizio Romano declared the transfer “100 per cent confirmed” at the start of June. Documents between the clubs were completed, the fee agreed, the personal terms in place since May. This was meant to be a formality.

It has turned into a collapse.

Romano revealed on X that United have now informed Atalanta the deal is off, describing it as “considered as collapsed” after the Premier League side changed their plans. Atalanta, for their part, are adamant there is nothing wrong with the player, insisting Éderson is “100% fit” and ready to rejoin their squad.

For United, the U-turn is a jarring twist in what had looked a straightforward start to a pivotal window.

From “first signing confirmed” to cold feet

The club’s recruitment drive was supposed to build on a strong second half of the season under Michael Carrick, a run that dragged them up to third place and back into the Champions League. That finish brought extra money, renewed status and the promise that United could once again shop among the elite.

Éderson was lined up as an early statement. Romano had previously written that all documents for a €45m package were done, calling him United’s “first signing: 100% confirmed.” The timing was clear: the player would sign later in the summer after his international commitments.

Then the doubts surfaced.

Behind the scenes, concerns over his fitness emerged, prompting a reassessment. United, wary of committing major funds without complete clarity, stepped back. The club has not publicly detailed the exact nature of the concerns, but the outcome is stark: no transfer, no unveiling, no new midfielder.

Atalanta, unconvinced by United’s change of heart, now plan to reintegrate Éderson into their plans.

Éderson caught in the middle

For the player, the situation is a brutal shift from near-certainty to limbo. Speaking at the World Cup as the move edged towards completion, Éderson cut the figure of a man already braced for the next chapter.

“I have to wait. Now I have to enjoy this moment, then we will see,” he told reporters. “Certainly, everything is almost done, but now I have to enjoy this moment. This is a wonderful experience and you have to enjoy the most.”

“Almost done” has become not happening at all.

A deal many saw as a bargain

The collapse will sting even more for those inside the game who viewed the fee as a rare piece of value in an inflated market. Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro was among those who believed United had stolen a march.

“I think Éderson as well, £38 million I believe,” he told BritishGambler.co.uk last month, comparing the Brazilian to other midfielders on United’s radar. “When you think, Man Utd are linked with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Tchouameni from Real Madrid, they’re all obviously world-class players, but they are so expensive comparatively.

“I think £38 million for Éderson is a bit of a bargain, really, in today’s market, right?”

Sandro’s assessment went beyond the price tag. “I know that he’s a top midfielder. He went to Brazil a few times with the national team. I saw a couple of videos, whilst I didn’t follow him game by game, I know that he’s strong. He has that physical ability to play in the Premier League and I know that a few other clubs wanted to sign him from the Premier League as well.”

Those clubs will be watching closely now. A player previously marked “100% confirmed” for Old Trafford is suddenly back on the shelf, with Atalanta convinced he is ready to go and United stepping away.

The question is no longer whether Éderson will anchor United’s midfield in the Champions League next season. It is who will move fastest to seize an opportunity that, until this week, looked closed.
