Liverpool's Mbaye Transfer Saga Faces Challenges as Time Runs Out
Liverpool’s bid to rebuild their forward line has hit a serious snag, with PSG winger Mbaye growing increasingly disillusioned by a transfer saga that has dragged through the summer.
With the window entering its final stretch, Andoni Iraola is running out of time – and patience may not be the only thing slipping away. According to L'Equipe, the Senegal international is now ready to explore alternatives after weeks of stalemate, convinced Liverpool have allowed the process to drift.
He is no longer locked on Anfield. He is listening.
€20m gulf stalls deal
At the heart of the stand-off lies money. A lot of it.
Liverpool and PSG remain separated by a reported €20 million in their valuations of Mbaye, a gap so wide that neither side has yet blinked. Liverpool have pushed back against PSG’s firm asking price, while the French champions have shown little appetite to soften their stance.
Talks are said to be moving, but only slowly. And that pace is precisely what threatens to sink the deal.
Mbaye’s frustration with the drawn-out negotiations has become a factor in its own right, potentially as damaging as PSG’s demands. Team-mate Bradley Barcola is also understood to have voiced irritation at the delays, a sign of how long the saga has rumbled on in Paris.
Iraola’s attack short on firepower
The timing could hardly be worse for Liverpool.
Mohamed Salah has gone, leaving a gaping hole on the right and in the dressing room. The club’s level dipped last season, and the squad has been further stripped this summer with the departures of Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson.
Iraola walked into Anfield after Arne Slot was dismissed on the back of a grim 2025-26 campaign, tasked with jolting a fading side back into contention. Victor Munoz, Jeremy Jacquet and Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo have arrived, but none carries the weight of a marquee forward signing.
The search for that statement addition has been bruising. A €50m offer for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh has already been knocked back, while Cody Gakpo is being heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, threatening to thin the attacking options even further.
If Mbaye slips away, and neither Barcola nor Minteh can be prised free, Liverpool risk entering the new season with one of the lightest winger groups in the Premier League.
Ten days to act
The clock is now part of the story. Less than ten days remain before the window shuts, and Liverpool’s margin for error is shrinking fast.
Mbaye’s growing irritation has turned what once looked like a priority target into a fragile opportunity. Liverpool must either close that €20m gap with PSG or pivot decisively to an alternative, and do it at speed.
There is no soft launch to this new era either. Iraola’s side open their 2026-27 Premier League campaign away to Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday – a brutal test for a team still searching for its next star wide forward.
By the time they walk out on Tyneside, will Liverpool have their new winger in place, or will this summer be remembered for the one that slipped away?
