Barcelona's Rodri Debut Delayed as Title Defence Begins

Hansi Flick will have to wait to unleash his biggest summer signing.

The Barcelona coach confirmed on Saturday that Rodri will not feature in the Spanish champions’ La Liga opener away to Elche on Sunday, despite the fanfare around his arrival from Manchester City.

“He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” Flick told reporters. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.”

Barcelona paid a fee that could climb to 76.5 million euros ($89 million) for the Spain World Cup winner, bringing in a commanding presence to anchor and elevate their midfield.

The wait for his debut should not be long. Flick indicated Rodri could be involved as early as Thursday, when Barca face Athletic Bilbao in their second league match.

Striker question hangs over Barca

If midfield looks reinforced, the attack still feels one signing short.

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres both gone, Barcelona enter the new campaign still searching the market for a centre-forward. Flick kept his cards close to his chest when asked who would start up front at the Martinez Valero, but one name is forcing its way into the conversation.

Hamza Abdelkarim, just 18, has lit up pre-season with four goals in friendlies and has clearly caught his coach’s eye.

“Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” Flick said. “He’s a number nine, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.”

The Egyptian teenager offers a classic focal point. Around him, Flick has options who bring something very different.

New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can operate centrally as false nines. So can Raphinha and Dani Olmo, giving Barcelona a fluid, interchanging front line if Flick chooses movement over a traditional striker.

Cancelo ready as Rodri waits

One new arrival is available immediately.

Joao Cancelo, signed this week to strengthen the full-back positions, has already been cleared to play at Elche.

“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” Flick added.

So Rodri will watch from the sidelines as Barcelona begin the defence of their crown, the midfield general held back for a few more days. In his absence, the spotlight turns to a reshaped attack and a teenager chasing his breakthrough on opening night.
