Liverpool to Honour Kevin Keegan with Tributes at Anfield

Kevin Keegan’s name has echoed around Anfield for more than half a century. In the coming weeks, Liverpool will make sure it does so again – this time in remembrance.

The club have confirmed a series of tributes to the former forward, who died last month at the age of 75, marking the passing of one of the true architects of Liverpool’s modern era.

Keegan arrived from Scunthorpe United in 1971 and helped haul Liverpool to the summit of English and European football. Across six glittering seasons, he collected three league titles, two Uefa Cups, the European Cup and the FA Cup, driving Bill Shankly’s and then Bob Paisley’s sides with relentless energy and edge.

Now the club he helped transform will pause to salute him.

Joint tribute with Newcastle

Liverpool are in talks with Newcastle United over “special tributes” to Keegan ahead of their Premier League opener on 23 August. The fixture offers a poignant symmetry: two clubs he served with distinction, uniting to remember a man who became a hero on Merseyside and a talisman on Tyneside.

Details are still being finalised, but the intention is clear. The season will not begin as normal. It will begin with Kevin Keegan.

Anfield to stand still for first home game

The first home league match of the campaign, against Nottingham Forest on 29 August, will bring the focus back to Anfield, the stadium where Keegan’s legend was forged.

Liverpool have confirmed that players will wear black armbands, a “special fan mosaic” will rise from the stands, and a minute’s silence will be held before kick-off. It will be the first league game at Anfield since his death, and the club intend to frame it as a collective act of remembrance.

Keegan’s image, his goals, his trophies – the story of his time in red – will dominate the build-up. For many in the ground, it will be a farewell to a childhood hero. For younger supporters, it will be a lesson in how Liverpool first learned to dominate Europe.

Early tribute in pre-season

The commemorations will begin even earlier.

When Liverpool face AS Monaco in a pre-season friendly on 9 August, the matchday programme will carry a “commemorative front cover” dedicated to Keegan’s life and career on Merseyside. Inside, his achievements and impact will be revisited for a new generation.

As this will be the club’s first home fixture since his passing, the game will also carry its own emotional weight. A period of applause will be held before kick-off, special tributes will run on the big screens at Anfield, and once again the players will wear black armbands.

On a summer afternoon that usually belongs to fitness drills and tactical experiments, Liverpool will instead turn the spotlight onto their history – and one of the men who wrote it.

Keegan’s honours list tells one story. The response planned by Liverpool and Newcastle tells another: of a player whose influence stretched far beyond medals, into the identity of clubs who now prepare to say goodbye, one more time, under the floodlights.
