Julián Álvarez's Escape Route: Arsenal or Bust

Julián Álvarez has just one escape route left out of Atlético Madrid this summer – and it does not lead to Barcelona.

The Spanish club have shut that door, bolted it and thrown away the key. Arsenal, watching from London, sense an opening with five days of the window remaining, but the deal is tangled in issues that stretch far beyond tactics and transfer fees.

Barcelona blocked, tension rising

According to Spanish outlet "Marca", Atlético’s stance on selling Álvarez to Barcelona is absolute. Internally, the message is blunt: the chance of him joining the Catalans is "zero". No negotiations, no compromise.

Álvarez, though, has not given up on the idea. He has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, clinging to his hope of forcing a move to the Camp Nou. His absence has only deepened the standoff.

Joan Laporta had publicly insisted that Barcelona would push for Álvarez right up to deadline day. Instead of softening Atlético’s position, that insistence appears to have hardened it. The Madrid club’s board released a statement backing the decision not to sell to their La Liga rivals, and relations between the two institutions have grown increasingly strained.

A way out abroad – for a price

With Barcelona off the table, Atlético have drawn a different line: Álvarez can leave, but only to a foreign club, and only for 150 million euros.

His future in the Spanish capital was already under scrutiny after a flashpoint against Villarreal. Atlético fans turned on their own striker, jeering him, and Álvarez responded by heading straight to the dressing room alone. That moment felt like a fracture. Since then, the idea of a clean break has gathered pace.

This is where Arsenal step into the picture as the most realistic option. The Premier League club have shown strong interest and Álvarez is said to be attracted by their sporting project, the chance to lead the line in a side built to compete at the very top.

But the negotiation is not just about football.

Brexit, family, and a London complication

One of the biggest obstacles sits away from the pitch: residency and visa procedures for Álvarez’s family in the United Kingdom.

His family currently live with him in Spain. British immigration rules have tightened since Brexit, which complicates any move to London. Some of his relatives saw their residency permits lapse after his previous spell in England, turning what would once have been a routine relocation into a legal and bureaucratic puzzle.

There is some clarity on at least one front. Journalist Verónica Brunati has explained that Álvarez’s wife should be able to obtain residency as the dependent partner of a worker with a valid visa, which would allow her to live with him legally in the UK. That eases part of the concern, but not all of it.

Arsenal believe they can manage the visa process for the entire family if Álvarez decides to join them at the Emirates Stadium. Inside the club, there is confidence that the paperwork will not kill the move.

What they have not done yet is make the decisive step. No formal, knockout offer has landed on Atlético’s desk, even though Arsenal are convinced an agreement is within reach before the window closes on the first of September.

So Álvarez waits, Atlético dig in, Barcelona rage on the outside, and Arsenal hover on the edge of a deal that could reshape their attack. With the clock ticking, does London become his only way out?
