Aston Villa Signs Ibrahim Mbaye for €55m Deal

Aston Villa have struck an agreement in principle with Paris Saint‑Germain to sign Ibrahim Mbaye in a €55m (£47m) deal, landing one of Europe’s most coveted teenagers just as their season has started to unravel.

The 18-year-old winger is due to undergo a medical on Saturday before signing a five-year contract, with an option for a further year. If all goes to plan, he will walk into a Villa Park dressing room still reeling from a brutal opening-day reality check.

Villa were hammered 4-0 by Brighton in their Premier League opener, a defeat compounded by a red card for Joao Gomes. One game in, they sit bottom of the 2026-27 table. They badly needed a jolt. Mbaye is being signed to provide exactly that.

Villa beat Liverpool, Chelsea and Leipzig to Mbaye

The deal is a major statement from Villa. Liverpool had tracked Mbaye throughout the summer, while Chelsea and RB Leipzig also made several approaches in recent days. All three clubs saw the same thing: a fearless wide player with 42 senior appearances already for PSG and the potential to explode at the top level.

Liverpool’s interest cooled when PSG’s initial demands climbed towards €70m, according to RMC Sport. The fee dropped, Villa moved, and the landscape changed. What had looked like a long-running Premier League tug of war now appears to be ending with Mbaye in claret and blue.

He will join Alejandro Garnacho, who arrived on loan from Chelsea, as a fresh option out wide. Two young, direct wingers, both with something to prove, dropped into a team that has just been humbled. The timing is no coincidence.

Liverpool pivot to Minteh as Brighton dig in

Once PSG’s price for Mbaye pushed beyond their threshold, Liverpool turned their attention elsewhere. Their focus has shifted to Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh, but that chase has been anything but straightforward.

Liverpool have already seen bids of £50m and £60m rejected. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler wants to keep Minteh and made that clear, even as he acknowledged the uncertainty that comes with a thriving young talent.

“Rumours. Rumours,” Hurzeler said. “Let’s see what happens. Again, another example of a player who benefits from the success of the team.

“He benefits for example from hard work from Pascal [Gross], hard work from Jack Hinshelwood, hard work from all the other players.

“And he knows it. Therefore I also think it’s important to understand as a player what you have here, playing for a club like Brighton.

“You have a club that gives you the chance, you team-mates who are really trying to push you, you have a club that is there for you also in tough moments.

“[New Man United signing] Carlos Baleba had so many tough moments when he was here, Minteh also had tough moments, but we were always there for them, always tried to help them, their team-mates are there for them.

“So I think it’s also important for the players to understand what they have here with this club, how the fans are connected, how we are working together.

“It’s difficult to find a similar environment, or better environment, for potential young players. But the same with Minteh, we were successful as a team, that brings attention on him, so let’s see what happens.

“If you ask me if I’ll try to convince him to stay, yes I try to convince him to stay. But can I control everything? No, I can’t control everything.”

Minteh is currently out with a leg injury but is open to joining Liverpool. The Reds have also made an enquiry for Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr this week as they test the market for alternatives.

A sliding door moment for Villa and Liverpool

For Villa, Mbaye’s arrival would be about more than just a transfer fee or a promising CV. It would be a direct response to a nightmare start, a bold move to inject pace and unpredictability into a team that looked flat and exposed against Brighton.

For Liverpool, the story is different. They have chosen not to meet PSG’s valuation and now find themselves locked in a test of resolve with Brighton over Minteh, while sounding out Sarr as another option.

One club has pushed its chips in on Mbaye. Another has walked away and gone hunting elsewhere. The teenager’s first steps at Villa Park will show who read the market – and his potential – better.
