Lionel Messi Set to Acquire Spanish Club CD Eldense, Expanding His Football Ventures
Messi Nears Full Ownership of Spanish Second-Division Team CD Eldense
Lionel Messi, the Inter Miami star, has agreed in principle to take over CD Eldense, a club competing in Spain's Segunda Division. This move marks another step in Messi's expanding involvement in Spanish football as he plans for a future return to Catalonia.
Deal Details and Approval Process
According to Marca, Messi is poised to acquire all shares of the Alicante-based club without any third-party shareholders after the due diligence phase wraps up. The takeover now awaits formal approval from Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) in the coming days, which would make the transaction official.
Background on CD Eldense Ownership
Before Messi's involvement, CD Eldense was owned by an international investment group led by businessman Juan Carlos Trujillo, who took control from Pascual Perez in October 2025. Although Argentine investor Ricardo Pini had offered €12 million, Messi's unexpected interest shifted the negotiations, positioning him as the likely new owner of the club near Catalonia.
Expanding the Messi Family’s Football Holdings
This acquisition adds to the family's growing football investments. Earlier this year, they bought UE Cornella, a fifth-tier Spanish side. In addition, Messi teamed up with Luis Suarez to purchase Uruguayan club Deportivo LSM. The family's influence extends further through Lions FC, where Messi’s brother Matias acts as club president.
On-Field Challenges at CD Eldense
The club faces difficulties on the pitch after sacking head coach Claudio Barragan following just two points from four matches. Pressure mounts to appoint a new manager quickly and improve the team's position in the league table. Messi’s expected takeover could provide much-needed financial stability and direction for the club moving forward.
