James Trafford has become the goalkeeper Leeds United are building their summer around. Not one of several options. The option.

Talks are under way with Manchester City over a deal for the 23-year-old, as Daniel Farke moves to plug the most glaring gap in his squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Leeds have lost last season’s surprise No.1 Karl Darlow to Manchester United on a free transfer, and Illan Meslier has gone to Arsenal. Two senior goalkeepers out, no established first-choice in.

So the focus has snapped onto Trafford.

Leeds move to solve No.1 crisis

Leeds still have Lucas Perri, brought in from Lyon on a four-year deal last summer, and long-serving Alex Cairns in reserve. Neither is viewed as the long-term answer for a club that has just fought its way back to the top flight and wants to stay there.

The search has led them back to the Etihad, and to a goalkeeper whose career has stalled just as it threatened to take off.

Trafford is understood to be Leeds’ priority target, with The Athletic reporting that negotiations between the clubs are active. Crucially for Farke, the player is leaning towards Elland Road despite strong interest from Newcastle United.

That preference has shifted the whole market.

From Burnley mainstay to City understudy

Newcastle tried to land Trafford last summer, only to see him return to City from Burnley. The move looked like a launchpad. Trafford went back believing he would become first choice after Ederson’s departure to Fenerbahce.

Then came the twist. City swooped late in the window for Gianluigi Donnarumma. Overnight, Trafford slid down the pecking order to No.2.

His season never truly belonged to him after that. He operated as the back-up across the 2025/26 campaign, a deputy rather than a leader of the line. In February, he admitted that life on the bench “wasn't what I expected” and that he had “tried to guard against the situation happening”.

Even so, he still forced his way onto the pitch often enough to make 17 appearances in all competitions, contributing to a campaign that delivered both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup for City. Medals in the cabinet, but not the minutes he craves.

A proven No.1 looking for a home

Trafford’s ambition is clear: he wants to be a Premier League No.1 next season, not a luxury reserve. That is exactly what Leeds are offering — and exactly what they need.

His credentials as a first-choice goalkeeper are not in doubt. At Burnley, he was undisputed No.1 for two seasons before his City return, anchoring a defence that conceded just 16 goals in 46 Championship matches in 2024/25. That record, in a relentless division, underlined his reliability and temperament.

The form carried him onto the international stage. Born in Cockermouth, Trafford made his England debut in March, collecting the first of two caps, and travelled with Thomas Tuchel’s squad to the World Cup this summer. He did not go as a prospect. He went as part of the conversation.

Newcastle turn elsewhere as Trafford leans to Leeds

Newcastle have not walked away from the goalkeeping market, but Trafford’s inclination towards Leeds has forced a rethink on Tyneside. Eddie Howe’s side are now assessing other targets, including Parma’s Zion Suzuki and Brighton’s Carl Rushworth.

Leeds, by contrast, have clarity. They want Trafford to walk into Thorp Arch as their new No.1, with Perri and Cairns behind him, and to grow with a team determined to establish itself back in the Premier League.

City, Leeds, Newcastle, agents, numbers. All of that still has to be resolved.

But for a 23-year-old who has tasted cups, caps and a World Cup squad without yet owning a Premier League season, the question is no longer whether he leaves City.

It is whether Elland Road becomes the place where James Trafford finally gets a goalmouth to call his own.
