Leeds United in Talks to Sign Manchester City's James Trafford

Leeds United Eye Manchester City's Goalkeeper James Trafford

Leeds United are reportedly advancing discussions to bring James Trafford, a goalkeeper from Manchester City, to Elland Road this summer. The club is seeking fresh options after Karl Darlow, who had become the first-choice keeper under manager Daniel Farke during the latter part of the 2025-26 season, left for Manchester United on a free transfer.

Initial chatter suggested that Japanese keeper Zion Suzuki might join Leeds from Parma, but interest in him seems to have faded. Instead, sources indicate that Leeds are focusing their efforts on securing Trafford, who appears eager to leave the Etihad Stadium in search of regular playing time.

Progressing Talks and Player Interest

According to reports from The Athletic, Leeds is making strides in convincing Trafford to move north to Yorkshire. Newcastle United, once considered potential suitors, no longer seem to be contenders for his signature. Trafford featured in 17 games across all competitions for City last season, but only four of those were Premier League matches. Still, he played a role in helping Manchester City lift both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was signed from Burnley last summer for a fee reported to be between £27 million and £31 million. It is expected that City will seek a similar amount to recoup their investment.

Leeds' Ambitions and Squad Enhancements

Leeds United, having fought hard to remain in the Premier League during the previous campaign's second half, aims to finish in the top half of the table for 2026-27. Recent additions like Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic, acquired for £34 million, and Fulham’s Harry Wilson, who joined on a free transfer, suggest the club is carefully strengthening its squad.

Adding Trafford would likely represent an upgrade from Darlow, with the young English goalkeeper seen as a promising talent who could one day challenge for the England number one spot.
