Galatasaray's Bold Move for Bruno Fernandes
Galatasaray are preparing one of the boldest moves of the summer – a double-pronged push to prise Bruno Fernandes away from Manchester United.
The Turkish champions, emboldened by back-to-back titles and Champions League ambitions, are ready to test United’s resolve and the player’s loyalty with a package that hits hard on both the pitch and the balance sheet.
Galatasaray’s big swing
According to reports from The Telegraph and Ben Jacobs, Galatasaray are lining up a €50m (£42.8m) offer to United and a four-year contract for Fernandes that would transform his earnings.
President Dursun Özbek is described as “determined” to land the United captain. The proposed deal on the table is eye-catching: €21m (£18.3m) net per year, plus a €4m signing-on bonus. Thanks to Turkey’s favourable tax regime, that structure would effectively allow Fernandes to double his current take-home pay at Old Trafford.
For a 31-year-old entering what is likely his last major contract, it is the kind of offer that forces a pause. Even for a player as entrenched at United as Fernandes.
Contract ticking down
The timing is no accident. A £57m release clause in Fernandes’ previous deal has now expired, but his current contract only has 12 months left to run, with United holding an option to extend by a further year.
Right now, he earns around £200,000 a week. Not small money by any measure, but Galatasaray’s proposal would blow that out of the water.
Clubs across Europe and beyond have taken note of the situation. The lack of a fresh agreement at Old Trafford has opened a narrow window, and Galatasaray are trying to drive straight through it.
They are not the first heavyweight suitor. The Saudi Pro League, and specifically Al-Hilal, went hard for Fernandes last summer, putting colossal sums on the table. He turned them down, choosing instead to stay in Manchester and chase more major honours with United.
The same dilemma now returns, dressed in yellow and red rather than blue.
United’s stance: not for sale
For all the noise around the numbers, one message from Manchester is consistent.
The Telegraph, BBC Sport and Ben Jacobs all report that United have no intention of cashing in on their captain this summer, regardless of the size of any bid. Internally, Fernandes is seen as a central pillar of Michael Carrick’s project and a player to build around, not to trade.
United’s hierarchy view the Portuguese playmaker as irreplaceable in terms of leadership, output and standards. Letting him leave now, just as the club tries to reset and climb back towards the top of the Premier League, is simply not on their agenda.
TEAMtalk reported last week that United will keep Fernandes this summer despite mounting interest. Nothing since has suggested any softening of that position.
Fernandes’ loyalty under the spotlight
Then there is the player himself.
BBC Sport report that Fernandes’ priority remains clear: he wants to stay at Old Trafford. He is said to be fiercely loyal to United, even with the knowledge that he could earn significantly more elsewhere.
At 31, he knows a move to a more lucrative league could help secure his family’s future. That option will not vanish overnight. But he also believes he still has plenty to give at the highest level in both the Premier League and the Champions League before thinking about a final big payday.
For now, his focus is on adding to his legacy in Manchester, not on chasing tax advantages in Istanbul.
Galatasaray, though, are not acting like a club making a speculative enquiry. They are preparing a serious financial and sporting proposition, one designed to make even the most loyal captain think twice.
United have drawn their line. Galatasaray are readying their offer. The contract clock keeps ticking.
How long can that stand-off last before someone blinks?
